SOUTH WAYNE - The Black Hawk girls basketball team has been searching for a second scorer this season and junior Brooke Moore stepped up and answered the call Tuesday.

Moore scored 10 points and made two 3-pointers to help the Warriors knock off Albany 39-22. Black Hawk junior Aleigha Sigafus scored a game-high 11 points, but Black Hawk coach Mike Flanagan commended Moore for her offensive production and defensive play.

"I can't say enough about Brooke Moore," Flanagan said. "We have really been looking for a second scorer. She's a kid that has a great attitude and has a positive work ethic."

Black Hawk (3-7, 2-2 Six Rivers East) jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the first quarter and built a 10-point lead at the half.

"I think we had a lot of kids step up," Flanagan said.

Black Hawk freshman Hannah Herbst, Moore and junior Tatum Jackson each drilled 3-pointers in the first half to spark the Warriors.

"I thought it started defensively," Flanagan said. "We didn't give them a lot of easy scoring opportunities. They had to work hard against our defense."

Albany senior Jordan Stefanik scored a team-high eight points and senior Lyndsay Hoesly chipped in six points.

Herbst added seven points for the Warriors to go along with six rebounds and six assists.

Black Hawk will play No. 1 ranked Barneveld at 6 p.m. Friday at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Barneveld is the defending Division 5 state champions.

"It will be a gut-check game," Flanagan said. "It will be about pride. I don't know if there is a Division 5 team that can play with them. If you want to play with them, you better try something different."

Monticello 60, Pecatonica 27

MONTICELLO - Senior Courtney Leuzinger scored a game-high 16 points to propel the Monticello girls basketball team to a 60-27 win over Pecatonica Tuesday.

Pecatonica (0-12) jumped out to a 13-8 lead, but the Ponies responded. Monticello (6-6, 3-2 Six Rivers East) went on a 15-7 run in the second quarter to take a three-point lead at the half. The Ponies outscored the Vikings 37-7 in the second half.

"We got a little more aggressive defensively," Monticello coach Lori Brokopp said.

The Ponies used a press that forced turnovers and sparked a comeback.

"We attacked a lot more in the second quarter," Brokopp said.

The Ponies made 18 of 24 free throws.

"That is what we need," Brokopp said. "That is what we have been stressing lately."

Monticello switched to a 2-3 zone in the second half and limited the Vikings to just seven points.

"I think the zone gave them some trouble and shut down their inside play," Brokopp said.

Monticello senior Alyssah Kubly added 14 points and senior Mackenzie Zanoow chipped in 12 points. Both Kubly and Zanow hit two 3-pointers.

River Ridge 46, Argyle 44

RIVER RIDGE - Argyle sophomore Kayla Butler-Paulson's 3-point shot before the buzzer hit the rim and went awry and the Orioles lost a heartbreaker 46-44 to River Ridge.

River Ridge's Bridgette Myers made two free throws with 2.2 seconds to go. The Orioles got the ball to halfcourt and called a timeout with 1.1 seconds left.

"Kayla got a good look at it," Argyle coach Kurt Ritschard said. "Her shot was just off the rim. I thought overall our execution was good and our effort was there."

The Timberwolves outscored the Orioles 11-4 in the second quarter. With the loss, Argyle drops to 6-5, 4-1 Six Rivers East.

"River Ridge plays an aggressive man defense and we had trouble with that in the second quarter," Ritschard said. "They are known for defense. To put ourselves in a position to win says a lot about the fight in our girls."

Argyle senior Jenna Langmeier scored a team-high 12 points. Senior Kylie Johnsen added nine points and Paulson chipped in eight points. Both teams struggled from the free-throw line. Argyle made just 4 of 9 free throws and River Ridge was 9 of 23 from the charity stripe.

Barneveld 67, Juda 15

BARNEVELD - Hannah Whitish scored a game-high 22 points to power Barneveld to a 67-15 win over Juda.

Barneveld (10-0, 4-0 Six Rivers East) jumped out to a 20-1 lead in the first quarter and the lead ballooned to 41 points at the half, 44-3.
