SOUTH WAYNE - Black Hawk senior Mikayla Sigafus remains envious of teammate Alexis Warrell's powerful serve.
Warrell used a powerful serve to score 14 straight points including six aces to spark the Warriors to a 25-6 win over Albany in the first set Thursday, Sept. 5. The Warriors (2-2, 1-1 Six Rivers East) rode the momentum of the hot serving to sweep the Comets in three sets, winning the final two sets 25-18, 25-21.
"She just won't stop until she does a great job," Sigafus said. "She won't give up. I don't know how she hits it that hard."
Warrell finished with nine aces and 12 assists. She helped set the tone for the Warriors giving them a 15-2 lead they wouldn't relinquish. Warrell was well aware she was in a groove, but she remained focused.
"I was just thinking where to serve it," she said. "It was just a matter of keeping it in, passing the ball and keeping it alive."
Black Hawk coach Rachel Wolff said Warrell helped set the tone in the first set.
"We played that first set incredible," Wolff said. "I don't think they wanted to let Alexis down. Good serving goes a long way. You tell them and tell them and sometimes they listen. Tonight, they listened."
The Warriors jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the second set after senior Aleigha Sigafus' ace. The Warriors got solid play at the net from senior Mikayla Sigafus, who finished with nine kills. Albany (3-5, 0-2) made a run in the second set, but five service errors plagued the Comets.
Albany coach Connie Wunschel was concerned that her team was too timid on defense.
"You have to keep moving and attacking the ball," Wunschel said. "You can't let the ball attack you. You can't expect the person behind you or next to you to get the ball."
Wunschel said serve receive cost the Comets again. Serving is an area the Comets plan to improve on.
"I think they were trying to make the kill on the serve instead of getting it in," Wunschel said.
The Comets jumped out to a 12-7 lead in the third set after three straight points from senior Ashlee Berra. The Comets looked to be in a position to steal the third set. That was before Aleigha Sigafus scored nine consecutive points and notched three aces to give the Warriors a 17-13 lead. Albany senior Felicia Conley delivered an ace to tie the set at 18. The Warriors scored on a tip and called a timeout with none left and the Warriors were awarded a point to take a 21-19 lead.
Albany junior Felicia Caldwell had 11 digs and Conley had five assists. Berra had a team-high nine blocks and junior Alexis Kennedy had four kills. Six of Berra's nine blocks came in the second set.
"Berra was a net monster," Wunschel said.
"Albany is a scrappy team," Wolff said. "Volleyball is one of those games where you don't want to score points on yourself. When you are doing that it just kills the momentum. You want them to earn it."
