Warriors sweep Cheesemaker baseball team

WAUNAKEE - The Monroe baseball team had a tough time in Waunakee Thursday night, as the Cheesemakers were swept in a doubleheader by the Warriors. Waunakee won the first game 9-0 and the second game 15-2.

Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said his team's struggles at the plate were a product of solid pitching by Waunakee.

"They were a real good team," Huffman said. "They have some good pitchers. (Waunakee's Hunter) Hellenbrand had a nice fastball. He also had a nice slider. The guys struggled with that. He kept us guessing. It was just one of those instances where good pitching beat hitting. I didn't think our approach was bad, they just threw the ball well."

The Cheesemakers had five hits in game two but struggled to knock in base runners.

"We had opportunities with guys on base, we just had a hard time coming through," Huffman said.

A day after committing nine errors in a loss to Stoughton, the Cheesemakers had two errors in game one and four errors in game two. Huffman said he noticed improvement with the team's fielding.

"We were a little bit better," he said. "We still have some little mistakes that fester and opponents capitalize. We had some mistakes that just popped up again on routine plays. You can't give a team 4, 5, 6 outs in an inning."

Monroe is now 1-6 on the season. The Cheesemakers head to Deerfield today for a non-conference game.

"We did have to shuffle the lineup around (today)," Huffman said. "We're still trying to tweak the lineup and find the best lineup. We'll see how it goes."

Argyle 10, Monticello 0

ARGYLE - Colton Ploessl hurled a no-hitter for Argyle Thursday night against Six Rivers East foe Monticello, and the Orioles knocked off the Ponies in five innings, 10-0.

"He threw strikes," Argyle coach Chuck Bredeson said of Ploessl. "They actually took him into some longer counts and he didn't walk those guys. They fouled off a lot on him and he didn't lose those guys. He won those battles."

Argyle got off to a quick start at the plate. The Orioles scored three runs in the first, and added four in the third, two in the fourth, and one in the fifth.

"We hit the ball hard tonight," Bredeson said. "We only had one strikeout. In previous games, we had more than that, struggled putting the ball in play. It helps that it's getting warmer."

Monticello dropped to 0-5 with the loss. The Ponies travel to Cassville today. The Orioles improved to 3-1, with all of their games having been in conference play. They travel to Belmont today for a doubleheader with the Braves. Bredeson said he's been pleased with his team's performance in their first few games.

"I'm pretty happy. Happy with our pitching and defense," he said. "We started to hit the ball a little harder tonight."

Cassville 14, Black Hawk 11

SOUTH WAYNE - Walks came back to haunt Black Hawk, as the Warriors issued 15 free passes in a loss to Cassville.

"Take away half of those walks and we easily win," Black Hawk coach Jeff Solberg said. "We are getting a lot of guys some innings and that will pay off in the long run."

Black Hawk sophomore Tayler Rupnow pitched 3 2/3 innings and gave up five runs on two hits. He struck out two. Brady Meythaler tossed 1 1/3 innings in relief and gave up two earned runs. Black Hawk's Kyle Walters pitched two innings in relief and gave up two earned runs. Black Hawk senior Cory Rupnow went 4-for-5 with a double, triple and four RBI. Walters went 3-for-3 and Michael Powers was 2-for-5 with two RBI.

Lakeside Lutheran 18, New Glarus 1

LAKE MILLS - After two solid innings, the New Glarus baseball team was unable to contain Lakeside Lutheran in the third inning, as the Warriors scored 10 runs in the third on their way to an 18-1 victory.

"The first two innings, we played incredible baseball," said New Glarus coach Ross Eddy. "We had two outs in the third inning and the floodgates opened. With a young team, we have to take advantage of the opportunities. We can't give them extra outs. We gave them extra outs and they took advantage of it."

Kyle Larson started on the mound for New Glarus. He threw two and two-thirds innings, giving up 11 runs (7 earned) and eight hits.

Four Glarner Knights had hits Thursday night. Ashton Jelle, Tyler Molencamp, Gavin Binger, and Kyle Xistris-Songpanya each had one hit for New Glarus. Xistris-Songpanya knocked in the lone run for the Glarner Knights with and RBI double.

The Glarner Knights play tonight at Cambridge.
