SOUTH WAYNE - The Brodhead boys basketball team faced a tough opponent as they traveled to South Wayne to take on a stingy one-loss Warriors team. In the end, it was Black Hawk who prevailed, winning 54-41.
Heath Butler provided an early spark for the Warriors offense, scoring eight of his team's 13 first quarter points against a zone-implemented defense by the Cardinals.
"Heath did a nice job in driving to the basket, and I credit our guards in giving him the ball early on in the high-post as we tried to attack their 2-3 zone," Warriors coach Corey Manlick said.
However, Brodhead was able to hold the prolific junior in check throughout the remainder of the half, as they kept the game close entering halftime with both teams tied at 18 points.
After making some adjustments during the break, Manlick and his team were able to respond with a 20-point third quarter which gave the Warriors enough momentum throughout the remainder of the game to pull away with the victory.
"In the second half we tried to drive against their defense and attack their zone, and we ended up having some players who were able to step up and be able to score some buckets for us," he said.
Black Hawk received solid performances from a number of players, with Seth Bulter (16 points), Heath (13 points), and Brett Lovelace (11 points) leading the charge for the Warriors to move to 6-1 on the season.
The Cardinals (2-7, 1-4) had a solid outing by sophomore Ned Slocum, who scored a game-high 21 points. Josiah DeLorme contributed 10 points for Brodhead who host Argyle next Monday, Jan. 6.

BELMONT - A balanced attack by the host Braves caused problems for the Argyle boys basketball team as they lost Thursday night's cross-conference matchup by a score of 58-47.
Contributions from a number of players were able to give Belmont an early advantage as they entered halftime with a 30-18 lead.
After scoring only eight points in the third quarter, the Orioles were able to make a concerted push with a 20-point fourth quarter, but in the end, Belmont's lead was too much for Argyle, who with the loss, fall to 4-4 on the season.
The Orioles had solid performances by sophomore Riley Ostby, who scored a game-high 21 points, and senior Alec Treuthardt who added 16 points.
