SOUTH WAYNE - Black Hawk junior Hayden Schliem's favorite wide receiver is the Green Bay Packers' Donald Driver.
With the Warriors clinging to a 13-7 lead in the fourth quarter, Schliem made a Driver like impact when Black Hawk senior quarterback Michael Wolff hooked up with him on a 60-yard TD pass to help propel the Warriors to a 26-6 win over Pecatonica-Argyle Friday night. Schliem had three receptions for 102 yards and a touchdown including a leaping 33-yard catch on third-and-11 in the second half.
"I just zone everything out," Schliem said when he is in a situation when he has to make a play on a pass. "I just have to go up and get it. I know where the sidelines are at so I know if I have to keep my feet in."
Black Hawk coach Cory Milz credited senior offensive lineman Bryant Luhman for making a call to slide the line to pick up the blitz to give Wolff time to find Schliem on a pivotal score. Pecatonica-Argyle had six sacks and the Warriors overcame 11 penalties.
"We had a heck of a time picking up their edge blitz. That was a great adjustment by him," Milz said of Luhman. Luhman slid the offensive line to the side of the blitz and we got the ball off. Michael Wolff made a great throw and Hayden made the catch."
Black Hawk (4-3, 3-3 Six Rivers) forced three of the Vikings' turnovers in the first half and had four sacks. The Warriors scored 13-points off of four Vikings' turnovers.
"They out-coached us and out-played us," Pecatonica-Argyle coach Larry Green said. "We took a step back after last week. Too many turnovers and too many mental mistakes on defense."
The Vikings (3-4, 3-3) got off to a good start when sophomore quarterback Jon Hendrickson threw a 23-yard pass to senior Charlie Rubio on the first play. Schliem intercepted a Hendrickson pass on the second play. Five plays later, Black Hawk junior Michael Walker scored on a 2-yard TD plunge with 8 minutes, 50 seconds left in the first quarter to give the Warriors a 7-0 lead. Walker rushed for 107 yards on 16 carries and scored two touchdowns.
"Everyone was pumped up for this game," Walker said. "We wanted to beat Pec. It means a lot. We had a lot of penalties, but we kept fighting."
Wolff picked off a Hendrickson pass in the second quarter to set up the Warriors' next drive. The Warriors marched 81 yards in 10 plays, but the Vikings turned in a second quarter goal line stand. On fourth-and-goal from the Vikings' 2-yard line, Wolff's bootleg pass was incomplete and the Vikings took over on downs. Disaster struck for the Vikings. On the next play, junior running back Jared Johnson fumbled and Wolff recovered. The Warriors capitalized on the turnover when junior Jace Johnsrud scored on a 6-yard TD run with 5:37 left to give the Warriors a 13-0 lead. Wolff completed 6 of 11 passes for 134 yards and one touchdown.
The Vikings' defense set up their lone scoring drive after Johnson recovered a fumble. Three plays later, Rubio scored on a 2-yard TD run with eight seconds left in the third quarter to cut the Warriors' lead to 13-6 after Walker blocked the extra point.
Hendrickson completed 10 of 21 passes for 70 yards and he threw three interceptions. Rubio had nine catches for 56 yards. The Warriors limited the Vikings to just 88 rushing yards. Johnson rushed for 29 yards on 12 carries.
"Defensively, we played well," Milz said. "This was a huge win. It puts us in a good position. It gives us confidence going into the next two games."
The Warriors capped the scoring with a seven-play, 56-yard drive culminating in Walker's 8-yard TD run.
Black Hawk closes out the season hosting Cassville Friday, Oct. 15 and at Highland Oct. 21.
"We want to surprise some people in the playoffs," Walker said. "We have to get there first. We are confident we will get there."
