NEW GLARUS - The Black Hawk girls basketball team began its quest for a fourth-straight state trip with a season-opening 53-30 win over New Glarus Monday.
The Warriors broke the game open, outscoring the Knights 15-7 in the second quarter to take a nine-point halftime lead.
The momentum for Black Hawk rolled into the second half as the Warriors outscored the Knights 26-12.
"We didn't play the way we wanted to obviously," New Glarus coach Megan Scheele said. "They hurt us in the paint. We will have to work on that and rebounding."
Black Hawk sophomore Jen Wellnitz scored a game-high 21 points and senior Kate Quinn had 19 points.
New Glarus had three players score six points, including senior Alycia Atwell, junior Alexis Hanson and junior Anya Schween. The Knights were 8 of 18 at the free-throw line.
"We had some sophomores playing their first varsity game," Scheele said. "We had some nerves."
It's a quick turnaround for New Glarus which will host Evansville on Thursday. Black Hawk is at River Ridge on Friday.
"We have to work on getting ready for Evansville," Scheele said. "We have to learn from this. We can't dwell on it."
Clinton 59, Albany 37
ALBANY - Clinton had two big quarters and cruised past the Comets.
The Cougars outscored the Comets 18-7 in the second quarter to take a 16-point halftime lead. Clinton then outscored Albany 21-8 in the third quarter to put the game away.
Albany junior Cassidy Bump scored 19 points to lead the Comets.
"They beat us in transition," Albany coach Bryce Pickett said. "We did a poor job of boxing out and getting the rebounds."
