SOUTH WAYNE - The Black Hawk girls basketball team went up early on Warren and never looked back, defeating the Blue Devils 64-29.
The Warriors (5-4) scored 23 points in the first quarter and 16 in the second and headed into the locker room up 39-19 at halftime.
Junior Jen Wellnitz scored 14 of those first-half points and finished the game with 24.
"It came down to getting Jen the ball in scoring position," Black Hawk coach Mike Flanagan said. "As the game went on, she looked to become more of a distributor. She recognized the situation, and recognized (where the game was at)."
The situation was that the Warriors were up a ton, and the big lead gave Flanagan the opportunity to give some bench players some rare minutes.
"It's just a great chance to reward the kids that come to practice and work their tails off," Flanagan said. "Warren is a really really young team. The outcome wasn't in question. It was a matter of getting some kids a chance to do some things. Everybody on the roster scored, which is always nice."
Junior Michelle Flanagan added 11 points for the Warriors, and junior Tessa Cushman, freshman Tatum Jackson and Kortney Hull each chipped in seven.
The easy win came at a good time for the Warriors, as they deal with the return from Christmas break, a jam-packed January thanks in part to rescheduled games, and injuries.
"We had to knock a little rust off, but right now we're dealing with the injury bug," Flanagan said.
The Warriors were without senior Abby Schiferl due to an injury in Saturday's game against Mineral Point, and Flanagan said Cushman tweaked her ankle on Monday.
The Warriors will look to improve on their 2-1 record in the Six Rivers East when they host conference foe Albany on Thursday. Three days later they'll be in Durand for a boy/girl double-header.

MAZOMANIE - After being outscored in the first quarter, the Monticello girls basketball team settled in and took down the Vanguards.
"We didn't know a lot about Wisconsin Heights," Monticello coach Lori Brokopp said. "It took us a quarter to adjust."
The Vanguards switched back and forth between a man defense and zone defense the whole game, and Brokopp said she was pleased with how her players adjusted and continued to produce offensively.
Leading the way for the Ponies was junior Marissa Berg who led the team with 19 points.
"She was able to step up and hold us in it in the first quarter, and everyone else sort of joined in."
Sophomore Alyssah Kubly added 10 for the Ponies, and fellow sophomore Courtney Leuzinger chipped in nine.
"I thought Alyssah Kubly really played well," Brokopp said. "She makes her points happen because she's able to drive."
All of Leuzinger's points came in the second half.
Monticello will host conference foe Argyle on Thursday.

BELLEVILLE - High-energy play proved to be the difference maker for the Pecatonica girls basketball team as they took down the Wildcats.
"In the first half, we came out a little flat," Pecatonica coach Matt Bakkum said. "They really turned the screws on defense. They turned it up ... and really limited Belleville in what they could do."
Leading the way for the Vikings offensively were seniors Lizzy Britt and Michelle Francois who scored 12 points and 11 points respectively.
Nine of Francois' points came from beyond the 3-point arc, and Bakkum said the outside shot opened up some scoring opportunities elsewhere.
"People know Michelle likes to shoot, and they tried to collapse her pretty hard," Bakkum said. "It was nice to see the offense have some diversity. It's really starting to come around."
The Vikings will face their second straight non-conference road game, when they travel to take on Riverdale on Thursday.
Despite the back-to-back road tilts, Bakkum said his team is confident in their abilities regardless of where they are playing.
"We feel good about our team and our ability to dictate tempo," he said.
