WarBirds, Blue Devils fail to advance to team state

ROYALL - The third time wasn't the charm for the Black Hawk-Darlington wrestling team in the WIAA Division 3 team sectional.

For the third straight year, Fennimore knocked off the Warbirds in the sectional championship dual. This time, Fennimore topped Black Hawk-Darlington 43-25 to advance to the team state tournament.

"It was nice to make it there," Black Hawk-Darlington senior Grady Rielly said. "It would have been nice to get it done."

The WarBirds won six of the 14 matches against the Eagles. Black Hawk-Darlington's Leif Bredeson at heavyweight pinned Fennimore's Dylan Kehoe in 1 minute, 51 seconds. Junior teammate Kolbe Ubersox (132 pounds) pinned Fennimore's Kohl Wardell in 1:17.

Black Hawk-Darlington senior Tyler Mosley (182) defeated Aaron Ragels 4-0 and senior Brody Milz (220) beat the Eagles' Brayden Leffler 7-2. The other win for the WarBirds came from senior Paul King (120), who defeated T.J. Kenney 12-4, and Hunter Bredeson (152), who beat Fennimore's Nick Blaschke 9-3.

To get to the sectional final, Black Hawk-Darlington rolled to a 57-15 win over La Crosse Aquinas in the semifinal. Brody Milz, King and Cayden Milz (145) and Hunter Bredeson (152) posted pins.

Mosley (182) defeated La Crosse Aquinas' Peter Riley 13-2 and Black Hawk-Darlington's Karl Seffrood (195) beat Noah DeGroot 8-6. The WarBirds also got a win from Cody Blosch (126) 6-5 over Carson Haag and from Ubersox 17-2 over Albert Flottmeyer.

Black Hawk-Darlington's Aiden McGuire (106), Eric Hocking (113) and Rielly each won on a forfeit.



Division 2

VIROQUA - Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau-Melrose-Mindoro muscled by Evansville-Albany 46-24 in a WIAA Division 2 sectional semifinal. The Blue Devils won just five matches in the dual.

Evansville-Albany's Jared Miller (113) defeated Colton Sime 7-5 and teammate Adam Staver (138) pinned GET-Melrose-Mindoro's Bryce Blaken in 3:52. Evansville-Albany's Nolan Kicmol (152) pinned River Rommel in 37 seconds and teammate Tyler Aasen beat GET-Melrose-Mindoro's William Johnson 7-2. Albany junior Branden Lange (heavyweight) won on a forfeit.

Gale-Ettrick- Trempealeau-Melrose-Mindoro slipped by Lodi 31-30 in the sectional final to advance to team state.
