WHITEWATER - The Monroe boys track team had five top-six performances at the season-opening Nelson Daniels Classic Friday night at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
The Monroe girls track team was led by junior Tre Voegeli, who finished first in the pole vault clearing 9 feet, 6 inches. Team results were unavailable by press time.
"The kids competed," Monroe girls track coach Doug Miller said. "There were some that wanted a little more. It's a good starting point."
Doug Miller was excited by Voegeli's start to the season in the pole vault.
"She had a jump off to win it," he said. "She has worked hard. Her technique is together. She looked mature and had a really great meet."
Monroe senior Alex Barenklau took second in the 400 with a time of 52.49 seconds, and junior Jake Hirsbrunner took third (:53.09).
"It's really neat to have two of the top three," Monroe boys coach Curt Miller said. "Any time they place at this meet is a nice accomplishment. They had awfully nice times."
The Cheesemakers were without seniors Ethan Moehn and Steve Christiansen who were on a field trip. The Cheesemakers' 3,200 relay team of Cody Faust, Jarod Barenklau, Derek Christiansen and A.J. Cifuentes took fourth with a time of 9:08.85.
"It's nice to see some younger guys step up," Curt Miller said. "We still have the depth on our team where we can be successful."
Monroe junior Grant Keith finished fifth in the pole vault (11 feet, 6 inches) and junior Blake Bast also finished in the top eight (11-0).
There were several other performances on the girls track team that Doug Miller was impressed by. Monroe junior Georgie Myers cleared 4 feet, 8 inches for 10th place in the high jump and she went 28-3 in the triple jump, which is further than any jump last season by the Cheesemakers.
Sophomore Alyssa Dale took 13th in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:56.41.
"The second half of her race was outstanding," Doug Miller said.
The Cheesemakers' 800-meter relay team of Voegeli, Lauren Werth, Jess Jackson and Mafer Larraga finished 12th with a time of 1:58.73.
Freshman Abby Oudinot took 19th in the 400 meters with a time of 1:01.61.
"We probably should have had her seeded higher so she could have run in a faster heat," Doug Miller said. "That was a nice start for a freshman."
