MONROE - Tre Voegeli switched to a longer pole in the pole vault in an effort to soar to new heights.
Voegeli, a junior, didn't get her season-best pole vault, but she cleared 10 feet to win the event in a double dual against Monona Grove and Milton Tuesday, May 7. The Cheesemakers defeated Monona Grove 88-53 and knocked off Milton 86-54.
"It feels good to win the meet, but I know I could have done better," said Voegeli, whose best this year is 10-6.
She is confident that she will see improvements as the season winds down.
"It's a challenge," Voegeli said. "I guess I can only get better with it. It takes time. I think once I get used to it I will definitely improve."
Monroe junior Savannah Koester and Abby Oudinot tied for first place in the high jump (4-10). Oudinot won the triple jump (32-5 1/4) and Kayla Einbeck finished first in the 3,200 (13:16.18).
"Some of the kids were using this meet for conditioning," Monroe girls track coach Doug Miller said. "Some are using it for coming off of injuries and some are using it to compete. We have seen some kids drop their times and increase their performances. We expected that to happen."
The Cheesemakers' 400-meter relay team of Jess Jackson, Mafer Larraga, Voegeli and Lauren Werth finished first (53.12). Werth was able to hang on for the win against the Silver Eagles down the homestretch.
"I heard her coming," Werth said of Monona Grove sophomore Gabby Beauvais, who won the 100, long jump and led the Silver Eagles past the Cheesemakers in the 800 relay. "I told myself to pump your arms as quick as you can. We had good handoffs. It was all put together. It was fun to win and not come in second."
Miller was pleased with the performance, especially the Cheesemakers winning three of four relays.
"The 4x100 was a good race for us," he said. "We hit our handoffs clean. It was our best race of the season in that event. It was encouraging to see. If we can speed up the handoffs, I think we can probably push it a little more."
The Cheesemakers' 3,200 relay team of Lizzy Dale, Therese Hughes, Kayla Einbeck and Isabel Bazley won with a time of 10:52.41. Lizzy Dale teamed with Hughes, Bazley and Larraga to take first in the 1,600 relay (4:29.92).
Miller said Lizzy Dale crushed her best split time in the 3,200 relay.
"I told her mom whatever she fed her last night to feed her again next Monday before conference," he said.
Monroe's Corlissa Robertson, who has battled back from an ankle injury, took second place in the 100 hurdles (18.23). Alyssa Dale finished second in the 1,600 (5:40.76) and Lizzy Dale took second in the 800 (2:37.29).
Jackson finished second in the 200 (28.21) and senior Tabitha Egli finished second in the shot put (33-9) and Emma Brady was second in the pole vault (7-6). The Cheesemakers' 800 relay added a second-place finish (1:57.68).
"Alyssa Dale has been sick lately," Miller said. "She has had to back off from her training to get healthy. To see her run well tonight, I think she will continue to drop time."
