Vikings upend Cheese

MONROE - In a preview of an upcoming regional game, Stoughton's Nolan Stapelfeldt scored two goals to lead the Vikings to a 5-2 win over Monroe at the SLICE Arena Tuesday.

Monroe (3-17-2, 1-9-1 Badger South) received a nine-seed and will play at eighth-seeded Stoughton in a regional game Feb. 13. It's the second time the Vikings have knocked off the Cheesemakers this season. The Vikings edged Monroe 4-3 in Stoughton Jan. 6.

The Vikings started strong scoring two goals in the first period. Stoughton's No. 24 Brody Hlavacek opened the scoring with a goal at 1 minute, 33 seconds in the first period. Moments later, Stapelfeldt scored a goal on an assist by Hlavacek to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead.

Stoughton led 4-0 before the Cheesemakers struck in the third period. Freshman Cade Janecke of Orangeville, scored on assists from Cooper Dreyfus and Payton Stauffacher at 16:34 in the third period. Colton O'Connor scored a goal on assists by Stauffacher and Riley Jones to slice the Vikings' lead to 4-2 at 8:09 in the third.

The Vikings outshot the Cheesemakers 51-36. Monroe sophomore goalie Heath Bear had a game-high 46 saves.
