SOUTH WAYNE - Pecatonica-Argyle sophomore quarterback Logan Green has played basketball with A.J. Hendrickson for a long time and he's not surprised his basketball skills have translated to the gridiron.

Green took advantage of Hendrickson's leaping ability and completed 9-of-16 passes for 222 yards with four touchdowns to beat No. 8 ranked Black Hawk 40-0 at the Warriors' homecoming Saturday. Hendrickson had six receptions for 131 yards and scored three touchdowns.

"We get to work on our jumping in basketball," Green said. "A.J. did a good job of going up to get the ball. We worked hard in the summer and it's showing now."

With the win, Pecatonica-Argyle improves to 6-1, 5-1 Six Rivers, and is in a three-way tie with Potosi and Belmont atop the conference. Pecatonica-Argyle will play Potosi at 2 p.m. Saturday in Argyle's homecoming.

"It's a great team win," Hendrickson said. "It means a lot to come out of here with a win. We want to win the conference. When Drew (Schliem) went down, we dropped our heads. There were not many people who thought we were going to win the conference. We came together and we just have to keep going hard."

Black Hawk coach Cory Milz is searching for a way for the Warriors (4-3, 4-2) to get back on track, after the defending WIAA Division 7 state champions have lost two straight games and host Belmont Friday. The Warriors played without running back and defensive back Chase Stietz who missed the game due to a strained tendon in his foot.

"We are a school of 100 kids," Milz said. "You are what you are. Our kids for the most part were in the right spot. We just got beat by a bigger, faster and stronger team.

"We really miss Chase Stietz. We hope to have him back for the playoffs. Our leaders have to take a hard look at themselves to see if they want to lay down or fight back and salvage their season."

On the third play of the game, Green hooked up with Kole Kent on a 73-yard TD pass. Pecatonica-Argyle junior Riley Ostby, who rushed for 52 yards on 16 carries, scored on a 2-yard run late in the first quarter to give the Vikings a 14-0 lead. The scoring drive was set up by Green's 27-yard pass to Hendrickson on third-and-10 from their own 20-yard line.

"Logan does a great job of throwing it on point where we can go get it," Hendrickson said. "He does a great job of throwing it so we can catch it in stride."

It was an inauspicious start for the Warriors. After falling behind 14-0 and committing four of their eight penalties in the first quarter, a long snap went over Black Hawk senior punter Ben Meligan's head midway through the second quarter. He was able to race to the ball to get a short punt off, but the Vikings had a golden scoring opportunity getting the ball at the Warriors' 37-yard line. It's a scoring opportunity they wouldn't squander. Pecatonica-Argyle running back Cam Treuthardt cut back for a 5-yard TD run to give the Vikings a 21-0 lead with 3:44 to go in the second quarter.

Disaster struck on Black Hawk's next possession when they fumbled an option and Ostby recovered it at the Warriors' 34-yard line. Green then tossed a 34-yard TD pass to Hendrickson to give the Vikings a 27-0 lead at the half.

The Vikings were 4-for-6 converting third downs in the first half. Just as impressive as the offense, the Vikings' defense bottled up a powerful Warriors' running attack that had averaged 290 rushing yards per game in the first six games. The Vikings limited the Warriors to 145 total yards and 109 rushing. Black Hawk senior Shawn Woodruff rushed for 51 yards on 16 carries. The Vikings' defense forced two turnovers including an interception by Green.

"Our defense played a hell of a game," Pecatonica-Argyle coach Larry Green said. "We had a great week of practice and they were tuned in. Offensively, our playmakers made plays."

The Warriors had tough sledding trying to run the ball against the Vikings. Black Hawk senior quarterback Heath Butler was 6 of 20 passing for 36 yards with one interception.

"I'm surprised we weren't able to run the football at all," Milz said after the game. "I haven't watched the film yet. I imagine they did some stunting that we didn't pick up."

Facing fourth-and-4 late in the third quarter, Green tossed a 24-yard TD strike to Hendrickson to give the Vikings a 33-0 lead. Green also threw a 6-yard TD pass to Hendrickson midway through the fourth quarter to cap the scoring.

"We have said for two weeks that we have to eliminate the explosive plays and run the ball," Milz said. "We haven't been able to do that (eliminate explosive plays)."

Green made just his second start at quarterback since Schliem broke his ankle falling out of a tree stand in a deer hunting accident. The sophomore quarterback was confident in his first start against Cassville, but he was more at ease against the Warriors.

"I got the jitters out in that first game against Cassville," Green said. "After that my teammates have got behind me."

It's no shock to his coach and father, Larry Green, that Logan is having success as a varsity quarterback.

"Logan has been around this offense for a long time," Larry Green said. "He knows the game. For what he did throwing into the wind and with the wind, I can't say enough about his performance. Logan put the ball up and that is what you do when you have good athletes."

Larry Green understands there is another challenge ahead against Potosi in the race for a conference title.

"We don't look at what did or didn't happen last year," he said. "Everyone has a new team. We take it one game at a time."
