BLANCHARDVILLE - The Pecatonica baseball received a big boost with the return of senior Devin Jeglum to the lineup as the Vikings split two games at their home tournament Saturday.
Pecatonica (7-5, 2-0 Six Rivers East) pounded out 20 hits and lost to River Ridge 12-10 in a slugfest in their first game, but rebounded with a 12-5 win over Dodgeville in the consolation game.
"Getting Jeglum back makes us a better team," Pecatonica coach Jim Strommen said.
The Vikings stormed back from an 8-6 deficit with a four-run sixth. However, River Ridge came back and scored four runs in the seventh to win it.
Pecatonica junior Ross Gilbertson had a big tournament going 7-for-8 with six RBIs in two games.
"He really swung a good bat for us," Strommen said. "He's consistent."
Strommen said the Vikings made base running mistakes that took them out of even bigger innings.
"Mentally, it wasn't a very good game for us. That (base running mistakes) was the difference. That's what cost us the game."
The Vikings had six players with multi-hit games including Gilbertson (3-for-3 with two RBIs), sophomore Wyatt Massey (3-for-4 with one RBI), Jeglum (3-for-5 one RBI), junior Tannar Johnson (3-for-5), junior Taylor Berg (3-for-5 with one RBI) and sophomore J.J. Hogan (2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs).
Sophomore Matt Goldthorpe pitched 3 1/3 innings and gave up four earned runs on nine hits. Freshman Jake Scoville pitched 2 2/3 innings and gave up five runs (two earned) on six hits. Johnson pitched one inning in relief and took the loss. Johnson gave up three runs (one earned) on two hits. He walked two and struck out one.
In the consolation game, the Vikings trailed 5-3 entering the seventh and exploded for nine runs.
The Dodgers hit three batters, walked one and threw home on several fielder's choice plays, but were never able to record an out on throws to the plate. That opened up the door for a big inning by the Vikings. Gilbertson, who was 4-for-5 with four RBIs against Dodgeville, highlighted the outburst with a two-run single.
Hogan pitched a complete game for the Vikings. He gave up five runs (two earned) on six hits. He struck out four and walked three.
"J.J. pitched very well," Strommen said. "He kept us in the game. It was good to come back and beat Dodgeville."
