MONROE - No one could blame Monroe senior Cat Weeden for leaning back on the side of the pool after Stoughton edged the Cheesemakers 90-78 in a dual meet on Tuesday.
She deserved a chance to cool down after swimming the 100-meter breaststroke and 400 freestyle relay back-to-back. With the Cheesemakers leading the meet 71-69 late, Weeden won the 100-meter breaststroke by six hundredths of a second with a time 1 minute, 28.60 seconds. Going into the final 25-meters after a flip turn, she could feel the intensity.
"I saw everyone cheering for me," Weeden said. "That was nice. I thought I was behind her. I thought she had beat me. I saw Mrs. Coffey screaming and pointing. I usually get second. It felt good to get first."
The 400 freestyle relay team was disqualified in the meet's final race.
The Cheesemakers (1-3 Badger South) won five of the 11 events. Monroe junior Rachel Root had a hand in winning four races. She won the 200 individual medley (2:36.28) and the 100 backstroke (1:09.93).
"I wanted to be better under the water with my turns," Root said. "I wish I could have swam a little faster. I need to work on my turns and starts."
Monroe coach Linda Moser was excited with Weeden's performance that included a personal record in the 400 freestyle.
"She swam a really aggressive race," Moser said of Weeden in the breaststroke. "She didn't give an inch. She actually told the girls that she dedicates the race to someone before she swims. That is what she needs to swim against some of the best swimmers in the pool."
Root teamed with Lizzy Dale, Sarah Kind and Weeden to take first in the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:19.37. Root teamed with Dale, Angie Beaver and Kind to finish first in the 200 freestyle relay. The Cheesemakers swept the top two spots in the 200 medley relay. The Cheesemakers' 200 medley relay team of Jenni Sefcik, Monica Sefcik, Anika Nelson and Briana Katzenberger took second (2:35.72).
"I think all of the girls swam really hard," Root said. "There were a lot of PRs."
The Cheesemakers received a strong anchor leg from Kind in the 200 freestyle relay. She also took second in the 50 freestyle (:31.37).
"Sarah Kind has matured so much in the last couple of years," Moser said. "I have been watching her swim this year, and I have seen that maturity. She is a kicker and a fighter. She doesn't let anyone let up on themselves."
Jenni Sefcik finished second in the 100 butterfly (1:35.93) and Beaver was second in the 100 freestyle (1:09.03).
Moser was proud of the way the Cheesemakers finished even though they lost a close meet.
"They just keep proving over and over again that they don't give up," she said.
