BLANCHARDVILLE - Pecatonica baseball coach Jim Strommen was eager to see how his team would bounce back after a busy weekend that included prom on Saturday and a team trip to take in a Milwaukee Brewers game on Sunday.
The answer: just fine.
The Vikings staked starting pitcher J.J. Hogan to a six-run first-inning lead and the senior did the rest as the Vikings routed Monticello 12-0 on Monday.
Hogan allowed just one hit while striking out seven and walking one in the Six Rivers East Conference contest.
"I wanted to see us get our eyes wide awake after prom weekend," Strommen said.
Junior Jake Scoville and sophomore Chase Norton each had two hits and two RBIs, and sophomore Tyler Hodgson and freshman Drew Schleim each added two RBIs for Pecatonica (4-4, 3-3 Six Rivers East).
Strommen pointed out that Monticello was playing minus four players on a school trip - including No. 1 pitcher Lukas Kolasch.
"But we did a nice job in that first inning in getting off to a good start," Strommen said. "We had kind of a long layoff, so that was good to see."
Senior Austin Steffen was the losing pitcher for Monticello and collected the lone Ponies hit - a single to lead off the second inning.
BARNEVELD 19, ARGYLE 1
ARGYLE - Sophomore Alec Treuthardt and freshman Kyle Olson had Argyle's hits in a 19-1 loss to Six Rivers East-leading Barneveld.
The Eagles scored one run in the first and four in the second before erupting for a 13-run third inning.
Sawyer Lee started for Barneveld and allowed just one hit in three innings pitched.
Argyle dropped to 0-8 overall and 0-4 in the league.
