MONROE - Stoughton freshman Dylan Nowicki dazzled Monroe with a powerful fastball to combine on a four-hit shutout to lead Stoughton to a 5-0 win over Monroe Thursday.

Nowicki pitched five innings and gave up just two hits. He struck out eight in overwhelming the Cheesemakers.

"He was probably pitching in the mid 80s," Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said. "He's probably the hardest thrower we have seen all year. We didn't have a ton of scoring chances. It's a credit to him."

Monroe (12-11, 3-9 Badger South) left seven runners on base. Monroe senior Sean Saxby went 2-for-3 to lead the Cheesemakers. Senior Matt Coplien went 1-for-2 and junior Garrett Gogin was 1-for-3. Huffman liked seeing the Cheesemakers face a top pitcher.

"It's good to see. If we are going to make a run to the regional final or sectional we will probably see good pitching like that," Huffman said. "We have to be ready for it."

Monroe senior Lucas Neuenschwander started and pitched three innings. He gave up two earned runs on seven hits. He struck out two and didn't issue a walk.

"Luke really did a nice job," Huffman said. "He did what he always does. He pitched to contact. They (Stoughton) were getting locked in and getting better swings on him. We went to Hogan for a change of pace."

Monroe sophomore Hogan Edwards pitched four innings and didn't give up any earned runs. He struck out six and walked three.

Monroe will play a doubleheader at Orfordville Parkview Saturday and then host Beloit Turner May 28.
