VERONA - A big hole early and a barrage of 3-pointers late doomed the Monroe High School girls basketball team Tuesday night.

Verona upended the Cheesemakers 81-43 in a nonconference game.

Monroe (3-6), which got a team-high 13 points from freshman Sydney Hilliard, trailed 37-21 at halftime.

"They were up 14-0 to start and then we were able to keep even with them for the rest of the first half," Monroe coach Sam Mathiason said. "We did cut it to 45-31 early in the second half, but they ended up getting a whole bunch of 3s near the end of the second half."

Alex Luhring led Verona with 24 points, including six of its seven 3-pointers.

Freshman Emily Benzschawel added nine points for the Cheesemak-ers, including one of their three 3-pointers.

Verona, ranked No. 5 in the WisSports.net Division 1 Coaches poll, improves to 8-2. The only losses for the Wildcats this year have come to Middleton and Madison Edgewood.

Five of the Cheesemakers' six losses this season have come to teams ranked in the top 10 in the state.

Monroe hosts Milton on Jan. 5.

"We will take the positives from tonight, keep looking ahead and finding ways to get better for that next game," Mathiason said.
