VERONA - The Monroe Brewers rallied several times, but lost a slugfest to Verona 10-8 in a Home Talent League Western Section game on Sunday.
"We had some key hits and we out-hit Verona," Brewers co-player manager Lon Scheuerell said. "We just had three errors that cost us."
Verona jumped out to a 3-0 lead off Monroe pitcher Rooney Janecke. The Brewers (4-7) battled back with Ben Korth coming through with a single and Austin Burandt, who went 3-for-5, drove him in with a single in the second inning.
Burandt's first Sunday Home Talent game was a memorable one.
"It was Austin's first Sunday game and he had three hits," Scheuerell said. "It's nice to see a new face come and do a good job."
With the Brewers trailing 5-1 in the third, Kramer Henning delivered a two-run single off Verona's Ben Wallace to cut the deficit to 5-3. Monroe stormed back from a 7-3 deficit in the sixth. Matt Busjahn singled and Scheuerell walked. Adam Scherer delivered an RBI double and Burandt had an RBI single. Scott White's RBI single cut Verona's lead to 7-6. Verona answered in the sixth when Zach Spencer drove in two runs on a double. Spencer also scored as the Brewers overthrew second base.
Monroe's Ben Conway had an RBI triple off Matt Niffenegger in the eighth and Janecke had an RBI single in the ninth. Wallace pitched six innings and Niffenegger pitched three innings in relief.
Janecke pitched 6 1/3 innings and he gave up seven earned runs.
Hollandale 8, Wiota 5
HOLLANDALE - There is something about Wiota that brings out the best in the competition.
Hollandale picked up its first win 8-5 against Wiota. The Indians came back and scored five runs in the ninth, but Hollandale pitcher was able to hang on. Blanchardville earlier this season picked up its first win against Wiota (6-3).
"We seem to bring out the best in people," Wiota co-manager Dick Schliem said. "These teams like to get their first wins against Wiota I guess."
Wiota's Brad Schliem, who went 3-for-4, hit a two-run home run in a five-run ninth. Wiota's Merrill Brunson and Jeff Solberg each were 3-for-5.
Hollandale was led by Cody Carmody who was 3-for-5. Hollandale's Brad Zander, Alex Schauff and Thompson were each 2-for-4. Thompson pitched a complete game and gave up five runs on 14 hits. He struck out two and walked one. Wiota's Justin Doyle pitched five innings and took the loss. He gave up five earned runs on six hits. He struck out two and walked one. Tommy Meier pitched two innings in relief and gave up two unearned runs.
Argyle 6, Blanchardville 2
ARGYLE - Lance Rossing went 2-for-3 and had two RBIs to lead the Beavers to a win over the Bullets.
Argyle pounded out 12 hits and Dan Godfrey went 2-for-4.
Argyle's Jarret Bauman pitched a complete game and gave up two runs on 11 hits. He struck out nine and walked three.
Blanchardville's Trevor Theobald went 2-for-3 to lead the Bullets. Kyle Lyne and Mike Cleary also were 2-for-4 for the Bullets.
Blanchardville's Sam Wood pitched five innings and gave up six runs on nine hits. He struck out two and walked two. Dave Cleary pitched three shutout innings in relief.
