Vanguards cruise past Glarner Knights

NEW GLARUS - Wisconsin Heights junior guard Mackenzie Kraemer scored a game-high 25 points to help the Vanguards cruise to a 51-40 win over New Glarus Tuesday.

Wisconsin Heights (16-5) outscored the Glarner Knights 14-6 in the second quarter to take a a six-point lead at the half.

"They got on a roll there, and we struggled to score," New Glarus coach Megan Scheele said. "It was hard to dig ourselves out of the hole. We got it a little closer in the fourth, but Heights got going again in the late fourth quarter."

New Glarus (7-14, 4-6 Capitol South) was led by junior Vanessa Narveson and Julia Barnaby, who both scored 12 points.

New Glarus will wrap up the regular season at Lodi Friday.

"They're going to be a tough team," Scheele said. "We battled and fought all night; we have to overcome our mistakes. Get a little better."



Belmont 50, Pecatonica 23

BLANCHARDVILLE - Rebounding plagued the Pecatonica girls basketball team Tuesday in a 50-23 loss to Belmont.

Belmont's Keegan Kamps scored a game-high 20 points. The Braves raced out to a 15-2 first quarter lead and never looked back.

"It's what we've been talking about all year - we have to be a better team on the boards," Pecatonica coach Aaron Lancaster said. "We had a real hard time keeping them off the boards. We just made some bad decisions."

Pecatonica (2-20, 2-10 Six Rivers East) shot 2 of 21 from the field in the first half. Pecatonica senior Emily Scoville scored a team-high seven points. Senior teammate Brooke Johnson added five points.

"We forced a lot of things, and we just can't do that," Lancaster said. "We have to shoot with confidence. I'm proud of the girls for their effort and how hard they played."

Pecatonica will open up WIAA Division 5 regional play at Benton-Shullsburg Feb. 24.

"They're a really good team, a young team, and we're going to work hard to prepare best we can for Tuesday," Lancaster said.
