BELLEVILLE - Brodhead-Juda senior Kaleb Erb will always remember the dual meet against Sugar River Tuesday after he and his junior wrestling partner Jackson Hauri both won their 100th career matches and the Cardinals slipped by the Raiders 31-30 on the eighth tiebreaker.
With Brodhead-Juda leading Sugar River by three points going into the final match, the Raiders needed a win from sophomore Robert Chenoweth at 125-pounds to have a chance to win the dual. Chenoweth came through, scoring on a takedown with 43 seconds to go in the third period to knock off Brodhead-Juda's Jayson Starr 4-2. With the win, the dual meet was tied at 30. However, after getting out the rule book, the Cardinals were declared a 31-30 winner based on the eighth tiebreaker - scoring more points first out of all the matches wrestled.
"I don't even know what the tiebreakers are," said Erb, who won on a forfeit at 160 pounds. "It's the first time since I've been in high school that we have had a tie. Sugar River is a good team. It's just a great experience to come out and wrestle them."
Erb was excited to get his 100th career win even though he won on a forfeit in a double dual with Sugar River and Lake Mills.
"I always wanted to be up on the board with the 100-win guys," he said. "It feels great. Not a lot of people get to do it. It kind of sucks to do it on a forfeit. It's great I get to do it with my wrestling partner (Jackson)."
Sugar River went 3-2 in the five matches wrestled. However, the Raiders forfeited four weight classes and the Cardinals forfeited three weight classes. There were double forfeits at 182 and 195 and no points were awarded at those weights.
"We have had a lot of time off," Sugar River coach Peter Swenson said. "He (Chenoweth) wrestled from behind the whole match. He has a motor and he wrestled great. Team success is not the big thing for us. Head-to-head and winning the close matches is where we find our success."
Hauri (152) made his return from a sprained knee injury. It was his first match back and he was looking to knock off the rust. Hauri was fueled by a first period takedown against Sugar River junior Jack Diederich. Hauri then scored on a three-point near fall with about 1-minute left in the third period to seal his 5-0 win.
"I definitely wasn't at 100 percent," Hauri said. "It was a good match to get under my belt before this weekend and conference."
Hauri always envisioned reaching the 100-career win milestone.
"I knew if I came out and wrestle like I know I can I knew I could get there," he said of 100 career wins. "I have in mind greater things, but this is a good milestone."
Sugar River senior Max Gerner (132) pinned Brodhead-Juda sophomore Zackery Bennett in 3:54. In one of the most thrilling matches of the night, in the final seven seconds of the 145-pound match, Brodhead-Juda sophomore Brian McCullough scored on a reversal and two-point near fall to pull out a 10-7 win over Sugar River junior Justin Knoebl.
"I thought we had the match," Swenson said after Knoebl's takedown with about 12 seconds left. "He (McCollough) got that reversal. It was a battle."
At 106, Sugar River freshman Joe Quaglia beat Brodhead-Juda freshman Braden Erb 10-4. Quaglia battled back from a 2-1 deficit. He scored on an escape at the end of the first period to tie the match at 3. Quaglia came through with a reversal with 58 seconds to go in the second period and that sparked him to the victory.
Brodhead-Juda's Kaleb Erb (160), sophomore Blain Berget (170), senior Trent Davis (220) and junior Russell Waeffler (113) each won on forfeits by the Raiders.
Sugar River sophomore Brian Hollis (126), senior Trevor Enloe (138) and junior Danny Enloe (heavyweight) each won on forfeits by the Cardinals.
In the night cap, Sugar River defeated Lake Mills 48-12. The Raiders got three pins and improve to 1-4 in dual matches. Brodhead-Juda's result against Lake Mills was not available at press time.
For the Raiders against the L-Cats, Knoebl (145) pinned Lake Mills' Alex Schlender in 1:35. Diederich (152) pinned Lake Mills freshman Charlie Cassady in 1:41 and Danny Enloe pinned Lake Mills junior Harley Jones in 2:30.
The L-Cats forfeited five weight classes including 120, 126, 132 and 160. There were double forfeits at 113, 182, 195 and 220.
"Numbers are an issue, but they (Lake Mills) have some tough kids," Swenson said.
This begins a tough stretch for the Raiders who wrestle four straight days and have six dual matches and a tournament in that stretch. Sugar River will wrestle three Capitol Conference matches in rescheduled duals today at Marshall High School. The Raiders then host Verona Friday and Saturday are at Wisconsin Dells.
"It's going to be a grind," Swenson said. "The numbers are an issue and you can have your travel time be longer than the duals. That's why the conference went to this a couple years ago."
