Turnovers doom Redbirds

DARLINGTON - Turnovers haunted the Darlington girls basketball team in a 61-45 non-conference loss to Lancaster Monday.

Lancaster's Kasey Kelly scored a game-high 16 points. The Flying Arrows jumped out to a 17-4 lead in the first quarter and led by 18 points at the half, 30-12.

"We just have to learn that we can't turn the ball over so much," Darlington coach Kelly Rose said. "It's a much different game if we take care of the ball."

Darlington senior Mariah Wiegel scored a team-high 12 points and made two of the Redbirds' three 3-pointers. Darlington sophomore Callie Norton added 10 points. Darlington (4-16) has three games this week. The Redbirds play at Cuba City Friday.

Rose said she's focused on this week before the team will prepare to play at New Glarus in a WIAA Division 4 regional quarterfinal Feb. 24.

"It's a big week for us," Rose said.



Potosi 51,

Black Hawk 42

POTOSI - Maddie Hawes scored a game-high 20 points to help Potosi hang on to a 51-42 win over Black Hawk Monday.

Hawes, Brooke Mckillip and Abby Kaiser combined to score 88 percent of the Chieftains' points. Mckillip added 13 points and Kaiser chipped in 12 points. Hawes drilled four 3-pointers.

"She has a really good step back 3," Black Hawk coach Mike Flanagan said of Hawes. "I thought we had her bottled up a lot of the time. She can create her shot. She's a really good player."

Black Hawk junior Aleigha Sigafus scored a team-high 17 points and had 12 rebounds. Black Hawk freshman Hannah Herbst added eight points, grabbed seven rebounds, had six assists and three steals.

"She (Herbst) had a nice all-around game," Flanagan said. "She just plays so hard. She never gives up."

Black Hawk (6-15, 5-6 Six Rivers East) trailed by just four points at the half, 22-18. The Chieftains outscored the Warriors 14-8 in the third quarter. Potosi switched between a man-to-man and zone defense.

"We couldn't get it going on the offensive end," Flanagan said. "Our shooters just couldn't knock down the wing threes."



Shullsburg 54,

Juda 49

BENTON - The Juda girls basketball team's big second-half comeback bid fell short in a 54-49 non-conference loss to Benton-Shullsburg.

Benton-Shullsburg raced out to a 19-10 lead on the Panthers in the first quarter. Benton-Shullsburg built a 17-point lead at the half, 39-22. The Panthers stormed back outscoring the Zephyr-Miners 27-15 in the second half.

Juda sophomore Chelsea Burkhalter scored a game-high 13 points and made two 3-pointers. Sophomore teammate Sara Jordan added 12 points and sophomore Alexis Goecks chipped in eight points and made two 3-pointers.

Benton-Shullsburg had a big advantage at the free-throw line knocking down 11 of 21 compared to Juda, which made 6 of 9 free throws.



Highland 53, Pecatonica 29

HIGHLAND - A second-half cold spell cost Pecatonica in a 53-29 loss to to Highland.

Highland led Pecatonica by just two points at the half, 27-25. Pecatonica (2-19, 2-10 Six Rivers East) went through a scoring drought in the second half and the Cardinals outscored the Vikings 26-4.

Highland's Caitlin Wienkes scored a game-high 13 points. Pecatonica senior Brooke Johnson scored a team-high 10 points. Senior teammate Emily Scoville added nine points.
