LA CROSSE - The Monroe wrestling team had three wrestlers finish in the top 10 at the 57-team Bi-State Classic Thursday at the University of Wisconsin- La Crosse.

Monroe sophomore Kevin Klopfenstein at 125 pounds finished eighth, senior Dylan Schwitz (152) took ninth and senior heavyweight Nick Walker was ninth.

"We wrestled some of the best competition in the state and in Minnesota," Monroe coach Jeriamy Jackson said. "It's a good reality check to see where we are at. I thought they wrestled well in a long tournament. I know some of them were disappointed with how they wrestled. It's a grind in this tournament."

Klopfenstein finished the second day of tournament 2-2. Klopfenstein pinned Auburndale's Kyle Kundiger in 2 minutes, 25 seconds. He knocked off Danny Trimner of Athens 8-2 and defeated Kicakpoo-LaFarge's Chris Townsend 4-2. South Saint Paul's Andy Jackson defeated Klopfenstein 4-2 in double overtime. In a seventh place match, Klopfenstein lost to New Lisbon's Cullen Petersen 2-0 with 10 seconds left.

Schwitz defeated Baraboo's Mubarak Kiyamor in a technical fall 15-0. He beat Bloomington Kennedy's (Minn.) Ben Cousins 2-1 for ninth place.

Walker finished 2-1 at the tournament. Westby's Brad Raasch defeated Walker 8-3. He battled back and defeated Lakeside South's Corey Myers 2-1. Walker edged Boscobel's Dalton Beinborn 2-1.

Monroe sophomore Aaron Hesgard also made it to the second day of the tournament, but lost his first match to Arcadia's Kyle Soboata and didn't earn a top 12 place.

"It's where he was seeded," Jackson said of Hesgard being in the top 15.

Jackson wants his wrestlers to learn from wrestling in close matches.

"We have to be in close matches so when we come home at home and are in them we know how to win them," he said.
