DARLINGTON - Dave Hirsbrunner's brand of Cheese isn't going to take long to reach its full potential.
Evidence of the uber-bright future of Monroe track and field was glaring Monday night as Hirsh and his Junior-Varsity gang brought home a second-place finish at the six-team Darlington Invitational.
"That's was something," Hirsbrunner said. "We usually take last at this one."
The Cheesemakers' "B Team" came up with four event winners and 117 points to finish a distant second behind the hosting Redbirds.
Freshman Jeff Hill continued his rise to fame with a 12-foot pole vault and Mason Goff's 10-6 effort was good for second.
"Jeff's just continuing an amazing pole vault run," Hirsbrunner said.
Cullen Sampson won the high jump at 5 feet, 10 inches, freshman Caleb Ahrens won the 300 hurdles at 42.8, just two tenths off the school's freshman record.
Dylan Starck, in just his second competition in the 2-mile run, won the event handily at 11 minutes flat, despite hanging with the pack for quite some time.
Darlington ran away with its home meet with 208 points and Pecatonica-Argyle took fifth with 44.
While the Lady Cheesemakers failed to bring home any golds, coach Curt Miller was ecstatic with several of his team's performances as several athletes medaled for the first time.
The two performances that stood out most prominently in Miller's mind were Jessica Leu's 29.8-second third place in the 200 meters and Lindsay Crubaugh's fourth-place finish in the pole vault (7 feet, six inches).
"She's a girl that works very hard during practice time, even though she knows that she is always going to be behind Liz Knutson and Meaghan Tomasiewicz," Miller said.
The top-shelf Cheese took the night off with a tremendous meet lingering tonight at Monona Grove where Monroe will challenge evenly-matched Oregon and the hosting Silver Eagles who are favored to win the Badger championship.
