SOUTH WAYNE - The Black Hawk girls basketball team needed only the opening period to put Madison Abundant Life away for good Tuesday.

The top seed in the Fort Atkinson Sectional, Black Hawk (19-2) opened its playoff quest for a state title with a 68-20 pounding of Abundant Life (1-20) on Tuesday in the first round of the WIAA Division 4 state playoffs.

The Warriors used their press and fast-paced offense to take a 32-2 lead by the end of the first quarter.

"It was over quickly," Black Hawk head coach Mike Flanagan said. "We called off the dogs early. After the first we played a spread-out offense and just looked for an open shot. There was no need to make the game look worse than it was."

Paige Butler scored 12 of her game-high 18 points in the first quarter.

The Warriors led 43-5 at halftime and 57-13 by the end of the third quarter.

Maria Meives scored 10 points, Katie Place had 8, Gabi Lehner had 7 and both Kim Wellnitz and Rachel Rygh scored 6 in the contest.

"We got it done. We are thankful to get through the first game like we did and we are thankful to be healthy," Flanagan said.

Black Hawk will host Southwestern (4-16) on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the regional semifinals.
