Three wrestlers still unbeaten at Mid-State

WHITEWATER - There are three local wrestlers still unbeaten after the first day of the Mid-State Classic on Wednesday.

Pecatonica-Argyle sophomore Lucas McKeon (182 pounds) pinned Ozaukee's Dann Zimmer in 3 minutes and he pinned Beloit Turner's Brock Woodman in 3:41.

Pecatonica-Argyle junior Nick Gilbertson (220) opened the tournament by pinning Freeport's Steve Beck in 2:48. Gilbertson then defeated Jake Fassler of Oregon (Ill.) 5-4.

Sugar River freshman Kody Popenfus at 106 pinned Sheboygan South's Alex Berg min 38 seconds. He defeated Bradley Prentice of Pulaski 5-3.

Sugar River sophomore Young-Chul Vetterli (145) opened up the tournament winning a major decision over Watertown's Isaac Elsen 11-1. East Troy's Kalib Price then pinned him in 1:33. Vetterli bounced back and defeated Beloit Turner's Seth Haskins 10-0.

Pecatonica-Argyle freshman Tristan Rosenstiel (145) pinned Whitewater's Steven Sobolweski in 2:55. Vernon Hills' David Pierce then beat him 11-0.

Rosenstiel in the second round of consolations defeated Vetterli 8-1.

Sugar River's Brooks Hendrickson went 2-1 on the first day. After a bye, he was pinned by Pulaski's Anthony Rottier in 3:13. He came back and beat Josh Merrill Oregon (Ill.) 16-10.

Wrestling will continue today.
