STOUGHTON - For the Monroe-New Glarus girls swim team, three individuals earned medals at the Badger South Conference meet Saturday.
The medal winners were New Glarus sophomore Maddie Hammer, fourth in the 100-yard freestyle (57.61 seconds) and eighth in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.95); Monroe sophomore Grace Keith, sixth in the 100 butterfly (1:06.13); and New Glarus freshman Nina Schiro, eighth in the 200 individual medley (2:28.83).
Monroe-New Glarus placed sixth as a team (182 points, 24 points behind fifth-place Oregon) and fifth in the final Badger South standings.
Madison Edgewood, ranked No. 1 in the Division 2 Wisconsin Swim Coaches Association state poll, won the Badger South Conference title 519-391 over second-ranked McFarland.
"It has been a year full of team accomplishments," Monroe-New Glarus coach Linda Moser said.
Keith and Hammer teamed with senior Anna Wolf and senior Abby Oudinot to take sixth in the 200 medley relay (1:59.89). The Cheesemakers' 200 freestyle relay team of Keith, junior Skylar Lassen, Oudinot and Hammer took sixth (1:48.38).
Lassen finished ninth in the 100 backstroke in 1:05.82, which was 0.30 seconds away from earning a medal, and ninth in the 200 freestyle in 2:07.72, which was about one second away from earning a medal.
"It has been a season of hard work and this week is no different as 10 girls get ready to swim at sectionals," Moser said. "This week will bring a lot of fine-tuning, going back to the basics and preparing mentally for what lies ahead."
Monroe-New Glarus will swim in the WIAA Division 2 Baraboo sectional at 1 p.m. Saturday at Baraboo Middle School.
