Three Mat Rats medal at Wisconsin Dells

MONROE - On March 21, the Monroe Mat Rats had two wrestlers participate in a Regional/National Folkstyle tournament at the Wisconsin Dells Center, while one wrestler participated in the Girls Folkstyle State tournament at the Wisconsin Dells Center through the Chula Vista resort. There were about 625 youths in the national division, and about 50 girls in the state portion. Wrestlers came from surrounding states to participate.

In the sixth- through eighth-grade division, Terri Holmes finished second overall. After a first-round bye, she won her second match, 8-3, before losing the final match in the three-person bracket, 7-5.

Kevin Klopfenstein had a four-man bracket in the 128-pound 1995-1996 boys schoolboy division class. Klopfenstein wrestled Bowen Schultz of Minnesota in his first match of the day and lost an 11-0 major decision. In his second match, he faced Tionte Parks, Ill. and won with an escape for a final score of 1-0. In his final match of the day, he faced Michael Egan of Waukesha. Klopfenstein won in a pin in 2:10, earning him a second-place finish.

The winner in Dusty Burkhalter's two-man bracket at 152 was decided when he twice pinned Zachary Luebke of Fort Atkinson, first in 1:32 and then in 2:52. Burkhalter also won an exhibition match against Stephen Voights of Brodhead by pin.

This weekend, March 27-28, is the State Youth Wrestling Tournament at the Alliant Energey Center in Madison. Tyler Davis, Troy Gorr, Reave Lincoln, Trevor Gorr, Aaron Hesgard and Kevin Klopfenstein will begin wrestling at 6 p.m. Friday. Wrestlers must win at least one match to resume wrestling at about 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Beginning their competition at about 8:30 a.m. Saturday will be Nick Schumacher, Drake Ingold, McKenzy Foley, Sam Kind and Traiten Gorr.
