MADISON - Monroe junior Tanner Thompson battled the rain and tough golfing conditions to win the Edgewood Invitational at the Maple Bluff Golf Course in Madison Monday.

Thompson shot a 5-over-par 76 to finish first place out of 110 golfers. Monroe finished third place as a team (327) out of 22 teams including Division 2 power Madison Edgewood (326) and Division 1 perennial state contender Middleton (325).

"It shows that we have the potential to shoot low scores," Monroe coach Braden Rindy said. "Our goals are to compete for conference, sectionals and state. Middleton is the best team in the state and we lost to them by two strokes."

Rindy was excited to see Thompson win the tournament.

"It was kind of a shock because we didn't know how the rest of the field would handle the elements," Rindy said. "The conditions were horrible. He (Thompson) handled the elements better than everyone else."

The Cheesemakers had three of the top golfers in the 110-member field. Monroe senior Matt Miller finished fourth, shooting an 8-over 79 and sophomore Nick Baumann took 10th, carding an 81.

Monroe's Devon Boeck rounded out the top four for the Cheesemakers, shooting a 91 and Eric Bush carded a 92.
