MONROE - Earlier this summer, one of Turner Hall of Monroe's member organizations, the Monroe Swiss Singers, earned a gold rating in competitive Swiss singing in Ontario. Just a week after that, another success was achieved by one of Turner Hall's staff.
After winning his division in the Wisconsin State Seniors Bowling Tournament in Manitowoc, Jeff Thomm, manager of Turner Hall's Family Bowling Lanes, earned an invitation to represent Wisconsin and bowl in the 2012 Senior Championships of the U.S. Bowling Congress (USBC). Thomm recently traveled to Reno, Nev. to participate in the two-day handicap singles tournament held at the National Bowling Stadium, which has 80 lanes and the longest video screen in the world.
More than 375 bowlers from all 50 states and four Canadian provinces took part in the event after qualifying at local and state tournaments.
There were five age divisions for the Senior Championships, with the minimum age being 55. After competing in two three-game blocks, the top six scorers in each age category advanced to a final round to bowl three more games. Thomm made it to the final round, landing in fifth place with a tournament grand total score of 1,951. This is the first time Thomm has bowled in a national tournament.
Thomm has longtime ties to the Turner Hall lanes, first bowling there as a youngster with family and friends, and then joining a league in the 1960s. A number of years ago he started volunteering time at the lanes, and for the last four years, has served as its manager.
Along with members of the Monroe Swiss Singers, Thomm was recognized at a recent dinner in the Turner Hall Ratskeller Restaurant with a special video and cakes.
