JANESVILLE - The Cheesemakers opened their boys tennis season on Saturday at the Janesville Quad, where they took third place.
"We played a few different lineups this weekend and got some young guys some experience," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said.
Two varsity players from a year ago were taking the ACT and missed the meet, and Saugstad held another player out because of an illness. That meant six players were getting their first taste of varsity action.
"The inexperience showed. We lost five match tiebreaks on the day," Saugstad said.
Monroe was 1-2 in three dual meets, beating Elkhorn (5-2) and losing to Janesville Craig (4-3) and Oregon (5-2).
Taylor Soddy played at No. 1 singles and went undefeated, as did Monroe's No. 1 doubles team of Carson Root and Garrett Tschanz.
"A third-place finish was definitely a disappointment to the boys, but the experience we gained will be very beneficial as we move forward. We definitely found some areas that we need to improve on and I hope (Saturday's) experiences will motivate the boys to work even harder in practice," Saugstad said.
Monroe travels to Waunakee on Tuesday.
