MADISON - Monroe's Leanna Schwartzlow and Rachel Root took on the best in the state at Friday's WIAA Division 2 state meet at the UW-Natatorium in Madison.
Schwartzlow, a senior, finished her final high school race ninth overall in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1 minute, 9.38 seconds. Schwartzlow was .59 seconds faster in the event than her seed time, despite battling a cold throughout the week. Plymouth junior Kate Criter won the race with a 1:03.28.
Earlier in the night, Schwartzlow was 14th in the 200 individual medley, finishing with a time of 2:17.62. Her time was 1.18 seconds slower than her seed time.
Milton freshman Bridgett Alexander took top honors in 2:05.98.
Root, a sophomore, was eighth in the 100 backstroke (1:00.20). Her finish was 4/100ths of a second faster than her seed time, despite also being ill during the past week. Sauk Prairie's Alison Meng won the event with a time of 55.91 seconds.
Root was also 12th in the 100 butterfly, finishing with a time of 1:00.29, over a half a second slower (.54) than her seed time. Meng also won that race, finishing in 55.94 seconds, over three seconds faster than her original seed of 58.96.
Both Monroe swimmers were making their second straight trip to state.
The pair scored 28 points in the meet, putting Monroe in 24th place as a team.
