MONROE - The Monroe golf team can't wait to tee off its golf season today.

The Cheesemakers are scheduled to open the season by hosting Monona Grove at 3:45 today at the Monroe Country Club.

Monroe is coming off a season in which it qualified for the WIAA Division 2 Mayville sectional.

"I think in the first match, we just need to feel it out," Monroe coach Jeriamy Jackson said. "I don't want to put too high of expectations on us right away. We have some kids who have been there before and we have some young kids, too."

The Cheesemakers have already played a couple of rounds.

"Normally in the spring, we don't get a chance to play before our first match," Monroe assistant coach Brian Jensen said. "The guys always want to get out and play in competition. They always want to get out there and see how they match up with other guys in the area."

The Cheesemakers return three of their top five golfers, including seniors Brandon Wilson, Aaron Krattiger and Mitch McArdle.

"I know Brandon Wilson wants to take that No. 1 spot and take a leadership role on the team," Jackson said.

Monroe will rely on its big three core of senior golfers.

"They are the veterans on the team," Jensen said. "We have some experience to help out younger players on the team."

Jensen said Wilson, Krattiger and McArdle have the knowledge of most of the courses and tournaments the Cheesemakers will play.

The other golfers competing for the top five spots include senior Garrett Voegli, freshman Kyle Bruce and juniors Lucas Jordan and Josh Mayer. After playing baseball for a couple years, Voegli decided to give golf a try this season.

"If we can get some things to go our way and string some scores together, we should have a chance to make it to the sectional," Jensen said.

The Badger South Conference had three teams advance to the sectional tournament last year, including the Cheesemakers, Madison Edgewood and McFarland. The Crusaders were the Mayville sectional champions and the Spartans were the sectional runners-up. Both teams advanced to state. Jackson expects the Crusaders and Spartans to be contenders for the conference title.

"They have experience and a lot of players coming back," Jackson said.

Getting the season opening nine-hole match at home is a big advantage.

"The seniors know what to do and know not to get down if they have a couple of bad holes," Jensen said.

The Cheesemakers will use the first match as a measuring stick.

"Obviously, with golf there is always things like your swing and short game you can work on," Jensen said. "We will take this first match and evaluate what everyone has to work on individually."
