DARLINGTON - Darlington-Cuba City girls golf coach Gary Ringen had a magic number in mind that he wanted the Redbirds to achieve this year.

"My goal for them is to break 200," Ringen said during the first dual match against Southwestern Aug. 14.

The Redbirds used a home course advantage to shoot a 198 Monday and defeated Lena-Winslow (Ill.) (235) by 37 strokes at the Darlington Country Club. Southwestern also golfed, but didn't have an official team score since the school only has three golfers.

Darlington showed no ill-effects by playing the first three holes through a pesky rain that delayed the tee off by 15 minutes.

"I think this is the type of consistency we need to play with," Ringen said. "They didn't let the rain get to them."

Darlington junior Nellie Black shot an 8-over-43 and had pars on No. 6 and No. 9.

Cuba City senior Ali McCauley finished with a 10-over-45. McCauley birdied No. 6 and had a par on No. 1.

"Both Nellie and Ali shot really well," Ringen said. "They played pretty smart golf. I think the greens were a little slower because they were wet. If they (Black or McCauley) did get in trouble, they were able to get out of trouble and save the hole."

Darlington sophomore Shelby Poss shot a 54 and freshman Naomi Black carded a 56. Darlington junior Erica McComish finished with a 57.

"Erica had her best round ever," Ringen said.

Darlington will play at the Prairie du Chien Invite on Wednesday and at the Viroqua Invite Friday.

"We have two big tests coming up and I think they are ready to compete in our two big invitationals," Ringen said.
