MONROE - The non-official preseason for next spring began for Monroe softball with two victories in Sunday's opening day of Monroe Area Fastpitch League play.
Monroe Optimist's No. 1 opened the summer league with a 5-4 victory over Lena and a 7-0 blanking of Stillman Valley. Meghan Roberts picked up both Red League wins as she struck out 10 batters in each game.
Emily Rufenacht, Coree Lee and Mandi Wilde all drove in runs in the victory over Lena while Roberts, Stephanie Hoover, Paisley Bennett and Wilde had RBIs in the second game.
Behind the strong pitching of Jessica Beckman, Monroe's Optimist's No. 2 edged Stockton, 2-1 as Beckman fanned 11 and walked only two to get the win. Bethany Meier and Emily Grossen drove in runs for Monroe.
Orangeville beat Stillman Valley, 7-1, in the other Red League final. Monroe shut out Juda, 8-0, in White League play while Pecatonica outslugged Brodhead, 16-15 in the other final.
