MONROE - Sugar River's Brecklyn Thompson won five individual events and Eli Zimmerman won four events to catapult the Sugar River Rapids to its fourth straight Dr. Stiles Invitational title Saturday at the Monroe City Pool at Recreation Park.

In the boys 8 and younger division, Thompson, 8, won the 100 IM (1:59.63), the 50 freestyle (47.51), 25 freestyle (21.24), the 25 butterfly (23.96) and the 25 breaststroke (30.30).

Zimmerman, 11, won four individual events in the boys' 11-12 year-old division including the 200 IM (3:24.99), the 100 freestyle (1:28.71), 50 breaststroke (50.25) and 50 freestyle (37.33). Zimmerman finished second place in the boys open 200 freestyle (2:57.83).

Sugar River outdistanced Platteville for the title 1,382-1,350.5 to win the meet. Jefferson took third (910), followed by Evansville (751.5) and Monroe finished fifth (703.5).

For Monroe Area Swim Team coach Linda Moser, the meet was a chance to see some of her incoming freshman swimmers up close in the nine-team 61st annual Dr. Stiles Invitational.

"It's a nice look at what is coming up and how they are doing," Moser said. "You can get an idea of this is a stroke we can work on, think about the holes on the team and think where we could put them.

"Sugar River has a ton of swimmers," Moser said. "I think we placed well for the 30 swimmers or so that we had. If we had about 30 more, we would be more competitive. It's a recreational swim team and it's about having fun. We are just learning about competing."

Sugar River's Nina Schiro, 14, won three individual events, including the girls open 200-meter freestyle (2 minutes, 59.20 seconds), the 13- to 14-year-old 200 individual medley (3:23.39) and the 100 freestyle (1:20.91).

Monroe's Anna Meritt, 16, finished second place in the open 200 IM (3:02.78) and second in the 15- to 18-year-old girls 100 freestyle (1:22.81).

Meritt teamed with her sister Emily Meritt, Linnea Tabaka and Savannah Brandt to take second in the 200 medley relay (3:01.65), which was just behind champion Evansville (2:56.3).

Emily Meritt, who will be a freshman at Monroe High School, looks forward to the high school swim season starting with Monroe entering its second year of a girls swim co-op with New Glarus.

"It's going to be tough," she said. "I just wanted to do my best. I'm working on the long-distance swims."

Meritt is friends with Nina Schiro, as they both swam for the Green County Golden Gators. They were on opposing teams this weekend, but they will join forces on the Monroe-New Glarus girls swim team this fall.

"She pushes me to go harder," Emily Meritt said. "I have to keep working on my breathing in all strokes."
