Sugar River washes Monroe away early

BELLEVILLE - While the ensuing rounds looked much better, Monroe took a flurry of blows in the first round and never fully recovered in a bout with non-conference rival Sugar River Monday night.

The Raiders scored all four of their goals in the first 20 minutes, 5 seconds in a 4-0 victory. Laura Durst scored the last two goals in a span of 2 minutes, 25 seconds to all but put things on ice midway through the first half.

"It was a very intense, fast, physical game and I think we were caught off guard by just how physical it was," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said.

The Lady Cheesemakers' skipper was pleased with her squad's recovery as the Raiders were held at bay for most of the final 60 minutes. Junior Pam Lehman was in the thick of things as she anchored the midfield for Monroe (0-2-1).

Sugar River senior goaltender Dani Pickett posted the clean sheet for the Raiders.

Junior Kaitlin Schluter got things going quickly for Sugar River with a goal at the 3:30 mark, Hannah Kernan added the second 15 minutes into play.

Monroe returns to Badger South play for the first time in two weeks when it hosts McFarland Thursday.
