Sugar River swims to three-peat

MONROE - The Sugar River Rapids won the 60th annual Dr. Stiles Invitational for the third straight year Saturday.

Sugar River outdistanced Platteville 1,290-1,105 to win the eight-team meet. Evansville finished third (1,029) and Milton took fourth (986.5). The Monroe Area Swim Team took fifth (785) at the event, held at Recreation Park.

Sugar River's Eli Zimmerman, 10, won two individual events including the 50-meter freestyle (38.90), the 50 breaststroke (53.09) and the 50 butterfly (44.04). Teammate Mason Thompson, 11, won the 50 butterfly (56.13) and took second in the 50 freestyle (42.03).

Monroe's Zachary Meighan, 10, finished first place in the 9-10 boys 50 backstroke (57.53) and was second in the 50 freestyle (46.49) and the 50 butterfly (1:02.81). In the backstroke, Meighan won by about 11 seconds over Sugar River's Jacob Piper, 9, who took second (1:08.85).

Savannah Brandt, 14, of Monroe took second place in the 13-14 girls 50 butterfly (42.26) and third in the 50 backstroke (44.64). She also helped lead Monroe's 200 freestyle relay team to a second-place finish. Brandt teamed with Emily Meritt, Linnea Tabaka and Anna Meritt to finish second (2:33.75).

The Monroe 10 and younger girls 200 medley relay team of Norma Parr, Ava Scace, Elsa Schaefer and Taylor Rufer took first with a time of 4:20.33, which was just ahead of second-place Milton (4:20.92). Sugar River's Ellie Eichelkraut, 10, took second place in the 9-10 girls 50 butterfly (56.04) and Monroe's Schaefer was third (59.09). Schaefer added a second-place finish in the 50 breaststroke (56.47).

Monroe's Landon Knobel, 12, finished second in the 11-12 boys 50 backstroke (57.41) just ahead of Sugar River's Mason Thompson who was third (58.30). Sugar River's Luke Brecklin, 12, took third in the 50 breaststroke (1:04.17). The Sugar River boys 11-12 division 200 medley relay finished first (4:04.26).

The Sugar River boys and girls won both the 8 and younger and 9-10 year-old 200 freestyle relays. Meighan teamed with Trent Newcomer, Teagan Knobel and Landon Knobel to finish third in the 11-12 boys 200 freestyle relay (3:53.83).

Monroe's Anna Newcomer, 11, finished third in the girls 11-12 division of the 50 freestyle (39.95). Newcomer teamed with Kayleigh Nesbitt, Grace Schrenk and Maisie Garwell to take second place in the 200 freestyle relay (2:57.19).

Anna Meritt added a third-place finish in the 15-18 girls 50 freestyle (36.42). Sugar River's Reagan Andersen, 15, took third place in the 50 butterfly (43.57) and third in the 50 breaststroke (51.84). Anna Meritt teamed with her younger sister Emily Meritt, Brandt and Tabaka to take third in the 200 medley relay (3:04.40).

Riley Hoesly, 8, won the girls 8 and younger 25 backstroke (30.0) and the 25 breaststroke (36.57), which was just ahead of teammate Natalie Wahl who took second (36.74). Hailey Thompson, 8, of Sugar River, finished third place in the 8 and younger girls 25 freestyle (24.63) and teammate Emery Johnson took second place in the boys 8 and younger 25 freestyle (21.98). The Sugar River 8 and younger 100 medley relay team won with a time of 2:22.31.
