BELLEVILLE - The third-seeded Sugar River girls soccer team shut down Edgerton's offense in a 3-0 win in the first round of the WIAA playoffs.
Karina Moen started in goal for the Raiders and had one save in her 51 minutes of action. She was relieved by Bailey Howard, who made three saves over the final 29 minutes. Sugar River coach John Ziperski said he was very pleased with his defense and goaltenders.
"We've had 14 shutouts in 20 games. That's been a real bright spot for us. We've only allowed five goals all season.," he said. "I'm very happy with how they're coming together in the back. Moen has been lights-out in goal."
Sugar River first got on the board at the 21:05 mark when Mandi Sargent scored on a corner kick off an assist from Nicole Sanders. The Raiders found the back of the net again a few minutes later when Shelby Hubbard scored an unassisted goal. Sugar River added another insurance goal in the second half when Taylor Legler scored off an assist from Carly Anderson at the 64:51 mark.
"We've had a problem scoring over the past few weeks. We've finally got our starting forward line back, they've overcome some injuries," said Ziperski. "Getting a goal in the first half kinda loosened up our players. They were able to play ahead and a little more relaxed."
Sugar River (14-3-3) plays again today at home against sixth-seeded Sparta.
Ziperski said the Raiders just need to worry about playing their own game.
"(Sparta) looks like they have some good, quality wins. We haven't ever seen them play," Ziperski said. "They have a good record this year. We just gotta take care of playing our kind of game and let them play their kind of game and we'll see what happens. We're just happy to have the win today."
