MONROE - Just as the Lady Cheesemakers seemed to have started laying some tread on the pitch at Honey Creek Tuesday evening, they were forced to park the car back in the garage.
Hillary Olson scored the second goal for Madison Edgewood in the first 10 minutes of the Badger South match off an assist by Jennifer Binkowski, perhaps putting some smelling salts under Monroe's collective nose.
"After those goals were scored, we really picked up our game and dominated the next 30 minutes until they called the game at half," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said.
The officials concluded the pitch was taking far too much rain and suspended the second half of the match indefinitely with Edgewood leading 2-0.
That certainly doesn't mean the surface was pristine at kickoff. After sustained rain pounded the field since mid-day, Monroe's defense that has been so solid struggled to move the ball through standing water.
"There may have been a little bit of a lack of focus at the start of the game," O'Neill said.
But Monroe, led by the steady play of center forward Abby Schneider, regathered itself to give the defending conference champion Crusaders all they could handle.
