MADISON - The Juda High School volleyball team came within a couple of points of a team title in the Madison Abundant Life quadrangular Thursday.
In a tournament decided by sets, the Panthers and Valley Christian out of Oshkosh and the Trailways Conference were unbeaten heading into their final match. The team that won two out of three sets would capture first place.
Valley Christian clamed the first set 25-21 and then eked out the second and decisive set 28-26. Juda won the final set 25-19.
"That second game against Valley, it was just one tip here or there, just one or two less errors," Juda coach Scott Anderson said.
Sara Jordan led the Panthers against Valley Christian with eight kills. Chelsea Burkhalter had 13 assists, MacKenzie Byrne had three aces, and Alexis Goecks had 18 digs.
"Overall, I'm extremely happy," Anderson said. "Valley Christian had two really strong hitters that we were - after we got the angles down - consistently able to dig."
In their first match of the quad, the Panthers swept Albany 25-10, 25-9, 25-16.
"Albany is a lot better this year already," Anderson said.
Against the Comets, Maddie Roth had seven kills, Burkhalter had 11 assists, Samantha Anderson had three aces, and Goecks had 17 digs.
Hailey Kammerer had six kills and three blocks in Juda's 25-18, 25-14, 25-22 sweep of Abundant Life. Burkhalter had 10 assists and four kills, Byrne had six aces, and Goecks had 15 digs.
Abundant Life placed third and Albany fourth in the quad.
