NEW GLARUS - Three players scored in double figures to help the Darlington boys basketball team remain unbeaten in a 54-36 win Friday over New Glarus.
Sophomore Hunter Johnson scored a game-high 13 points for the Redbirds, who improved to 9-0, 3-0 SWAL. Seniors Cole McDonald and Ben Muhlstein each chipped in 11 points.
New Glarus, which entered the game riding a three-game winning streak, hung with the Redbirds in the first quarter behind strong play from junior Trey Taylor, who led the Glarner Knights with nine points. New Glarus (3-7) finished the first quarter trailing by just five points, but balanced scoring from Darlington in the second proved to be the difference.
"It got away from us in the second quarter - we turned the ball over too many times," New Glarus coach Travis Sysko said. "We had some defensive breakdowns, and Darlington did a good job crashing the boards. You can't dig yourself a hole like that against a team like Darlington and expect to climb out of it. But that's what happened tonight."
Sysko said the Knights' lack of communication was to blame for Darlington's big second quarter, noting that the Redbirds scored eight points off of offensive rebounds in the quarter.
"They're a good defensive team; they have a good balance on offense," he said. "They don't have a lot of weaknesses in their game."
The Glarner Knights started the season 0-6 before its three-game winning streak was snapped, and Sysko thinks the team has plenty to build on going forward despite the loss.
"I thought we played more complete games during that winning streak," he said. "We just have to get back to being consistent for four quarters, both on offense and defense."
Senior Colton Boley chipped in eight points for the Knights, who will play at Cambridge Thursday.
Darlington will defend its unbeaten record Friday when the team hosts Southwestern.
