Steiner in running for gold medal

MADISON - Argyle-Pecatonica senior Mitchell Steiner missed the state golf tournament by one stroke the last two years, but after winning a sectional championship, he's making the most of his first trip to state.

Steiner shot a 4-over-par 76 on Monday and is in third place in the WIAA Division 3 state tournament at University Ridge in Madison. Steiner is three shots back and is in contention for a gold medal.

Spring Valley's Tyler Leach shot a 1-over--par 73 to take the lead after the first-round.

"He's been on a roll right now," Argyle-Pecatonica coach Chris Holcomb said. "If he can play par for the tournament that will keep him in contention for a state title."

Steiner teed off in the finals of the state tournament at 7:20 a.m. today.

Steiner birdied the 515-yard No. 2 and the 424-yard No. 10. He also shot par on 10 other holes.

"He's excited," Holcomb said. "He's playing really good golf. He left some shots out on the course. He could have easily shot a 72. With the wind blowing it was pretty tough. The greens were very fast. He had some issues on the greens with the speed. He got dialed in and played a good round."

Steiner played a practice round on Sunday in anticipation of the state tournament. He walked the course last year with teammate Matthew Severson who competed at state last year.

"Getting out and playing it is a whole different beast," Holcomb said. "He has a lot of support from family and friends and that gets him going."
