Stangel set on keeping things in the family

MONROE - Go west, young man!

That's what Monroe senior Brett Stangel will do as he will attend UW-Platteville this upcoming fall where he will play basketball for the Pioneers. And the Stinger is following the family blueprint after both of his brothers blazed fine college careers as Pioneers.

"After watching my brothers play at Platteville, it's been a dream of mine for a long time to be part of their tradition," Stangel said. "And they fill the house."

Packed houses will allow Stangel to not have to skip a beat after playing in front of the Monroe faithful.

"I had a great high school career, but now I'm really looking forward to the next phase," Stangel said.

He finally made his decision early last week after long deliberating between Platteville and Madison Edgewood, another popular destination for former Cheesemakers. Those two suitors emerged from a larger field as Stangel says he "didn't rule anybody out" as a junior.

He was wise to keep his cards close to his chest as his senior year had a few setbacks, most notably a broken leg that he rehabbed, mostly on the fly, down the stretch.

But that's all in the past now as he takes his game to the next level and just a jog out to the west at Platteville.

"I've still got four years to play ball."
