Squirt As take 2nd at state

MONROE - The Avalanche youth hockey teams found success at home and at state to the first weekend of the month, March 2-4.



Squirt A (10U)

Monroe Squirt A took second place in the WAHA Squirt 3A State Tournament.

The first game brought the team up against Merrill on Saturday afternoon and Monroe won 7-2.

The Avalanche came out strong and took a 2-0 lead in the first period, with goals by Maizy Fonseca, assisted by Carter Nemergut, and short-handed goal by Brody Koehn, unassisted. Monroe never slowed down and continued to rack up points in the second, with another goal by Koehn, assisted by Hans Brandt and Brady Stuart, and two more from Stuart, the first on an assist from Koehn, the second unassisted. Nemergut had the last two goals, the first unassisted and second with assists from Fonseca and Beau Janecke. Brock Brandli recorded seven saves in the game.

Monroe then beat Somerset 3-2 later in the day. The game was close throughout and the Avalanche played much of the third period on penalty kill, tallying 9 penalties for the game.

The first period was scoreless. Benjamin Erdley put the first goal on the board in the second period, unassisted. Somerset answered just before the end of the second period, with the game again tied, 1-1. Koehn scored a goal in the third, unassisted, putting Monroe in the lead, but that didn't last long, as Somerset scored 34 seconds later, tying it up again 2-2. With 57 seconds left in the game, Brandt scored a short-handed goal, unassisted, sealing the win and moving Monroe to the championship game. Brandli tallied eight saves in Game 2.

The Avalanche faced Waupaca Sunday afternoon for the championship and lost 4-1.

The lone goal was scored by Jace Daughenbaugh in the first period. With Waupaca ahead 3-1, Monroe pulled the goalie and Waupaca quickly scored an empty net goal, sealing the title. Brandli had 10 saves in the final.



Pee Wee A (12U)

On the weekend of February 23-25, the Avalanche hosted their annual Avalanche Classic PeeWee Tournament. 

First up for PeeWee A was the Cedar Rapids Rough Riders and won 6-0.

The first period was dominated by defense as that period ended scoreless. In the second period, the Avalanche got started with the first goal scored by Cameron Newcomer on assists by Breleigh Stuart and Carson Buholzer. That was followed up by a goal from Seth Brandt with assists by the Buholzer twins Carson and Cole. The last goal of the period was again scored by Brandt on assists by Wyatt Janecke and Marlies Brandli. Brandt would start the third period off with another goal for a hat trick assisted by Carson Buholzer and Cash Anderson. Janecke would score final two goals on assists by Stuart, Brandt and Cole Buholzer.

Miles Gordon had 13 saves in the net. 

The second game of the day was a loss to the Waunakee Wildcats, 3-2.

The Wildcats would score first and pull out to a 3-0 lead, but in the third period the Avalanche scored twice. The first goal scored was by Cash Anderson on an assist by Seth Brandt. Evan Brendemuehl would then put another one in the net. The Avalanche pulled goalie Gordon in the last seconds of the game to try and tie it up and send the game into overtime. Gordon finished with 20 saves in the game. 

The third game of the weekend was a 7-3 loss Feb. 25 to Waupun. The Avalanche kept it a close game until the third period when Waupun would put the game away.

Scoring for the Avalanche was Wyatt Janecke with two goals and Cash Anderson with one. S were recorded by Cameron Newcomer (two) and Evan Brendemuehl (one). 

The PeeWee A ended up in third place for the weekend with the points earned each game.

On March 4, the Avalanche hosted Janesville B, and despite being shorthanded three players, Monroe won 6-1.

Gordon gave up the shutout with 39 seconds left in the game and finished with 30 saves. Scoring for the Avalanche were Cash Anderson and Evan Brendemuehl each with two, and Dylan Lewis and Wyatt Janecke each with one. 

Assists were posted by Lewis with (four), Anderson (two) and Brendemuehl, Carson and Cole Buholzer each with one.



PeeWee B (12U)

The first home match up with Sun Prairie ended with an 8-2 victory for the Avalanche.

The team got goals from Easton Dreyfus, Gavin Roth (two) and Carson Kurshner, on assists from DJ Rath (two), Dreyfus, Kurschner and Ethan Rosenstiel, all coming in the first period. The second period was more great hustle from the team and three more goals, scored by Haden Barker from Hathaway, Jayden Downs from Rosenstiel and Roth with a power-play unassisted goal to complete a hat trick for the game. Sun Prairie snuck in two goals in the third and Monroe's scoring was capped by Hathaway, who was assisted by Barker and Christian Carpenter. Xander Obert had 18 saves.

March 4 saw the last home game for the Pee Wee B Avalanche team, which ended with a 9-2 win over Oregon.

Goals were scored by Hathaway and Dreyfus, with Rosenstiel assisting the Dreyfus goal. Rosenstiel assisted Kurschner's goal. Oregon would get one back, but the Avalanche scored two quick goals after that, one by Downs (Hathaway assist) and Hathaway with his second of the game (assisted by Barker). Oregon would fire a great shot past goalie Obert to round out the first period with the Avalanche up 5-2. 

Defense was key in the second period, as Monroe held Oregon scoreless while adding two goals of their own, with Hathaway completing his hat trick (assist by Kurschner) and a goal from Christian Carpenter (assist by Downs). The third period was once again controlled by the Avalanche, as Barker contributed his own goal and Rosenstiel put one in as well on assists by Hathaway and Dreyfus.  

Obert had 32 saves in the victory.
