MONROE - Volleyball took a backseat to a pink-out fundriaser for the Meier family battling cancer.
"I definitely think they knew they were playing for something bigger than volleyball," Monroe coach Heidi Witt said.
Monroe raised $2,000 for the Meier family. Evansville swept the Cheesemakers in three sets, 25-15, 25-15, 25-12 Tuesday.
The Blue Devils jumped out to a 14-7 lead in the first set and cruised from there. In the second set, the Blue Devils had three service errors, but withstood a Cheesemakers' rally to win. Monroe senior Kari Jordan had a kill and sophomore Chloe Schroeder came through with a spike to cut the Blue Devils' lead to 10-5. Jordan delivered an ace and Schroeder came through with a tip to cut the Blue Devils' lead to 11-7. Evansville was able to survive the rally to win the second set.
"They played with a lot of heart," Witt said. "They realized the big thing is they were not talking and communicating. They know they need to communicate better."
Monroe senior Maggy Johnson had a team-high six kills and Jordan had four kills and one ace. Junior teammate Paige Murphy racked up a team-high 10 assists and junior Haley Doherty added five digs.
Schroeder, who had one block, agreed with her coach's assessment after the match.
"We definitely have to work on our talking," Schroeder said. "We were kind of running into each other on the court. It's something we can practice and get better at."
The Cheesemakers were called several times for double hits and sets.
"You can't blame the refs," Witt said. "They called a lot of double hits. No other ref has been calling it like that. It took us out of our game. You question what they will call the next time you touch the ball."
Monroe junior Hannah Vetterli, who had two aces, came through with an ace in the final set to give the Cheesemakers a short-lived 3-1 lead. The Blue Devils battled back to take a 7-3 lead. Jordan had a kill later against the Blue Devils. However, after an official meeting, the Blue Devils were awarded a point because of an illegal substitution on the Cheesemakers. The Cheesemakers substituted a player into the lineup with the wrong number. The Blue Devils went on to score seven of the next eight points to take a 16-7 lead.
"That was my fault," Witt said. "They didn't take my mistake and get down. They were scrappy."
