Sparta upends Monroe

SPARTA - Colton O'Connor had one goal and one assist, but Sparta knocked off the Monroe boys hockey co-op in the season opener 4-2 Saturday.

O'Connor scored a goal on an assist from Jared Cline at the 13 minute, 39 second mark in the first period to give the Avalanche a 1-0 lead.

Sparta answered by scoring three goals in the second period. Monroe sophomore Travis Edmunds scored a goal at 8:08 in the third period on a pass by O'Connor to cut Sparta's lead to 3-2.

The Avalanche outshot Sparta 44-25. Monroe sophomore goaltender Heath Bear had 21 saves.
