Softball Roundup: Oriole pitchers combine to close out Black Hawk

SOUTH WAYNE - While freshman Kelsey Bartels was just what the doctor ordered for Argyle, another pitcher made the biggest throw of the night for the Orioles in a 6-5 softball ictory over Black Hawk on Tuesday.

Junior Sierra Granberg cut down the potential tying run at the plate with a clothesline throw from right field to record the second out of the seventh inning.

Brittany Flannery, Argyle's ace at the season's outset, cracked an RBI-double in a four-run fourth inning. The senior had three hits, as did No. 9 hitter Chelsea Zersen. The 13 Argyle (4-5) hits were far and away the most allowed in a game by Black Hawk (6-3) ace Janel Rupnow this season.

Rupnow and her mates are primed for upcoming postseason play despite the setback, as nearly all of their games have been settled by two runs or fewer. "When you're in so many close games that could go either way, you ain't gonna win 'em all," Black Hawk coach Roger Jackson said.

SIX RIVERS EAST

MONTICELLO 5, PECATONICA 3

It was as if Monday never happened.

Monticello busted off the gate with a four-run third inning and ace Mary Hershberger bounced back as the Ponies (6-3) rebounded from a 10-0, five-inning setback in Albany 24 hours earlier.

"Mary was a completely different pitcher," Monticello coach Duane Garrison said.

If Monday hadn't happened, Ponies senior Brienna Voegeli would be on a 6-for-12 streak as she had a two-run, two-out single from her No. 7 spot in the third.

Senior catcher MacKenzie Hilliard added three hits.

All three of the Vikings' runs were unearned.

Monticello travels to Argyle for a showdown Thursday after the Orioles helped the Ponies along to a 5-4 victory in Monticello by issuing 12 walks earlier this season.

ALBANY 14, JUDA 2 (5 INNINGS)

The Panthers were hanging tough until things came apart with two outs in the third inning Tuesday evening.

Juda committed errors to allow Albany to score five runs with two outs and take a 6-0 lead in the Six Rivers East matchup. The Comets piled on with eight in the fourth as freshman Aly Pierce went the distance pitching yet again for Juda.

Second starter Melanie Pehl is sick and Pierce will go again tonight in a non-conference game at home with New Glarus.
