BARNEVELD - There was no questioning which Comet's blaze was the brightest in Thursday's 3-0, 8-inning Six Rivers East softball victory over Barneveld on Thursday evening.

Albany senior ace Tara Walz danced her way to victory by striking out three, all looking, and walking none, while gladly putting in overtime to get the complete-game shutout.

"She was just on fire the whole night," Albany coach Connie Wunschel said. "She faced four in an inning twice and her defense was just fantastic behind her."

The Comets committed no errors and Amy Golz led off the top of the eighth with a triple that keyed the winning rally. After the senior shortstop scored on a passed ball, her classmates Megan Schulz and Angie Masseur singled, with Schultz scoring on a two-base error.

Golz had two hits, but Wunschel couldn't get over her pitcher's punctuality with the backward K's.

"They were as timely as they could be and she's starting to get in a groove," Wunschel said.

Janel Rupnow is rolling.

The Lady Warriors' senior ace allowed just three hits in a complete-game shutout of the Vikings at home Thursday evening.

Black Hawk junior Gabi Lehner played her leadoff-hitting role to perfection, going 3-for-3 and drawing a walk. She also stole second base after earning her free pass to lead off the third inning and keyed a game-changing four-run rally.

"Once she gets on, she's fast and can steal some bases," Black Hawk coach Roger Jackson said. "You couldn't really ask for more than getting on base every time."

Senior Amanda Walker drove Lehner in twice with hits, the first a double in the third.

MONTICELLO 11, JUDA 2>

The Ponies ran rampant and pulled away with a conference win at home Thursday evening.

Monticello swiped eight bases and collected 11 hits to knock off Juda. Kelly Anderson marshalled the hit parade as she had three, one of them a triple.

Mary Hershberger went the distance for the Ponies to get the win and four Ponies had multiple hits.

The Lady Redbirds got little comfort in home cooking Thursday evening.

Darlington lost its conference game with the Cubans that was originally to be played in Cuba City. The Cubans struck Darlington starter Shawna Foulker early for three runs in the top of the first.

NON-CONFERENCE

BRODHEAD 5,

FORT ATKINSON 2>

Freshman Erika Stampfli didn't appear to experience any separation anxiety without the assistance of her senior sister Kayla in a 5-2 non-conference victory at home Thursday evening.

The sisters have been tandeming recently to put away adversaries, but the up-and-coming star went all seven against Fort, fanning 10 and allowing just three hits.

The Cardinals erupted for four runs in the fifth to break up a 1-1 tie. Juniors Courtney Mielke and Leah Hegi both had two hits for Brodhead.
