The six Cheesemakers who will compete at the WIAA Division 2 Richland Center sectional are senior David Andrews at 120 pounds, senior Cole Murray (138), junior Sam Kind (160), junior Dempzy Foley (170), senior Hayden Arneson (195) and senior Kyle Walter (heavyweight). The top three finishers in each weight class will advance to state.
Both Walter and Arneson made it to state last season.
Murray (30-9) enters the sectional as the third seed. He may have to face Viroqua's Ryan Hannah (41-2), who is the defending Division 2 state champion, in the semifinals. He also could face Mauston junior Jarrett Dolata, who beat him in December at the Bi-State Classic in La Crosse in a 12-2 major decision.
"If I would put a percentage on who would make it through (to state), the highest percentage would be on Cole," Witt said.
Kind is coming off a regional championship. Kind (25-5) will wrestle Mount Horeb senior Aquoya Faust in the first round. If he survives that match, he could face Viroqua senior Dalton Bennett (38-8) in the semifinals.
"If he wrestles like he did in the finals of the regional, he will be OK," Witt said.
Witt said Foley will have the toughest road to qualify for state. Foley will wrestle Lakeside Lutheran's Casey Ponycsany (14-13) in a first-round match and will then face either Wisconsin Wrestling Online's top-ranked Elijah Alt (36-1) of Riverdale or second-ranked Jared Lenze (39-5) of Mauston in a semifinal or wrestleback match.
"Dempzy has the toughest draw," Witt said. "If he wins his first match he will have to wrestle the No. 1- or No. 2-ranked wrestler. To make it he has to somehow find a way to beat one of them."
Arneson, ranked third in the state, is still dealing with a quadriceps injury, but he's looking to make a second straight trip to state. Arneson (29-5) will wrestle Prairie du Chien junior Stephen Ronnfeldt (37-7) in a first-round match. If he wins, Arneson could face Lodi senior Jo Waltershceit (28-9) in a semifinal.
"He's not 100 percent," Witt said. "If he's 100 percent, I would be very confident in him making it back to state. There are no easy ones. There are four good wrestlers at 195."
Walter (30-10) has lost five matches in the past two weeks. He was a state qualifier last year and is looking to get back to the Kohl Center in Madison. He will wrestle Westby's Lane Anderson (20-12) in the first round. Then he could see River Valley's Tennessee Hatfield or Jefferson's Cris Perez in a semifinal.
"There are four really good heavyweights, and he will have to beat one of them," Witt said. "His big thing is he needs to be more aggressive on his feet. He's been too much of a defensive wrestler since Bi-State. When he's on top he's not using his legs to break kids down. Kids have been getting out on him too easy."
Andrews is coming off a 7-4 win over Evansville-Albany's Adam Staver, who is ranked in the top 10. Andrews (20-14) will wrestle a first-round match against Viroqua's Caleb Radtke. If he wins, he could face top-ranked Colton Nicolay of Lodi in the semifinals.
"He's capable of beating ranked kids like that," Witt said. "He wrestled with some grit last week, because he knew he had to win to go through."
