Silver Eagles tip Cheesemakers late

MONROE - The Monroe High School boys soccer team for most of the game was locked in a scoreless stalemate against Monona Grove on Thursday.

That all changed when Monona Grove's Anil Jergins scored a goal off a free kick that bounced around near the Cheesemakers' goal with about 6 minutes to play.

The Silver Eagles stopped Monroe 2-0 at Honey Creek Park.

"Our defense has been so solid," Monroe coach Tony Vasquez said. "Our defense has been playing excellent. It's disappointing for me not to have the guys rewarded for the effort they put in."

It's the second straight conference game Monroe (2-6-1, 0-2 Badger South) has been shut out. Milton blanked the Cheesemakers 2-0 on Tuesday.

"We have to keep trying to fix our offensive problems," Vasquez said. "We had opportunities. We just didn't finish them."

Monona Grove's Jessi Scalissi scored a goal at 87:41 to seal the win for the Silver Eagles.

"We were pushing up so much to try to tie the game," Vasquez said.

Sophomore Devan Schulte had 13 saves for the Cheesemakers.
